Which companies sponsor visas for professional engineers in Washington?
Boeing is one of the largest sponsors of professional engineers in Washington, particularly for aerospace and structural engineering roles. Amazon and Microsoft sponsor engineers in systems and software-adjacent PE roles. Civil and environmental engineering firms such as AECOM, WSP, and Jacobs also have active sponsorship histories in the state, along with public utilities like Seattle City Light and the Washington State Department of Transportation.
Which visa types are most common for professional engineer roles in Washington?
The H-1B is the most common visa for professional engineers in Washington, as PE roles typically qualify as specialty occupations requiring at least a bachelor's degree in a specific engineering discipline. Candidates from Canada and Mexico may qualify for the TN visa under the USMCA. Australian citizens can pursue the E-3 visa. Engineers with extraordinary ability may also explore the O-1A, though it requires substantial documented achievement.
How to find professional engineer visa sponsorship jobs in Washington?
Migrate Mate filters job listings specifically by visa sponsorship availability, making it straightforward to browse professional engineer roles in Washington without sorting through positions that won't support international candidates. You can filter by state and role type to surface relevant openings at Washington employers who have a documented history of sponsoring engineers, including firms in the Seattle metro, Bellevue, and the broader Puget Sound region.
Which cities in Washington have the most professional engineer sponsorship jobs?
Seattle accounts for the largest share of professional engineer sponsorship jobs in Washington, driven by its concentration of aerospace, technology, and infrastructure employers. Bellevue and Redmond are strong secondary markets, particularly for engineers working at technology companies with PE-required roles. Tacoma and Olympia offer opportunities in civil and environmental engineering, often tied to state government contracts and regional infrastructure projects.
Are there any Washington-specific considerations for professional engineers seeking visa sponsorship?
Washington requires professional engineers to hold a state-issued PE license for roles that involve public-safety engineering work, which is separate from the visa process but relevant to long-term employment eligibility. The state's strong university pipeline from the University of Washington and Washington State University means employers are familiar with sponsoring international graduates. Prevailing wage requirements tied to H-1B petitions are benchmarked to Seattle-area wage data, which reflects the region's competitive compensation for engineering roles.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored professional engineer jobs in Washington?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
