Which companies sponsor visas for professional engineers in Massachusetts?
Large defense and aerospace contractors including Raytheon Technologies and General Dynamics, along with engineering consultancies like AECOM, Jacobs Engineering, and WSP, are among the more active sponsors for professional engineer roles in Massachusetts. Life sciences and infrastructure firms along the Route 128 corridor also hire internationally. Sponsorship frequency and willingness vary by employer, project funding, and current headcount needs.
Which visa types are most common for professional engineer roles in Massachusetts?
The H-1B visa is the most common visa for professional engineers in Massachusetts, as PE roles typically qualify as specialty occupations requiring at least a bachelor's degree in engineering. The O-1A is an option for engineers with exceptional recognition in their field. Canadian and Mexican engineers may qualify for TN visa status under the USMCA. Australian engineers can explore the E-3 visa, which has no lottery.
Which cities in Massachusetts have the most professional engineer sponsorship jobs?
Boston and Cambridge concentrate the highest volume of sponsored professional engineer positions, driven by biotech, infrastructure, and technology employers. The Route 128 corridor, including Burlington and Waltham, hosts a significant number of defense and systems engineering firms. Worcester is growing in advanced manufacturing, and Springfield sees demand from civil and structural engineering firms working on public infrastructure projects.
How to find professional engineer visa sponsorship jobs in Massachusetts?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for international engineers seeking visa sponsorship in the U.S. You can filter directly by state and role to surface professional engineer positions in Massachusetts where employers have a documented history of sponsoring work visas. This saves significant time compared to manually screening general job boards that don't surface sponsorship information. Creating a profile also helps match your engineering background to relevant open roles.
Are there any Massachusetts-specific considerations for professional engineers seeking visa sponsorship?
Massachusetts requires PE licensure through the Massachusetts Board of Registration of Professional Engineers for engineers who sign and seal public documents, which is separate from visa sponsorship. Many employers sponsor the visa first and support licensure afterward. The state's concentration of research universities, including MIT and Northeastern, creates strong pipelines of internationally trained engineers, meaning competition for sponsored roles can be meaningful at top-tier firms.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored professional engineer jobs in Massachusetts?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
