Which companies sponsor visas for professional engineers in South Carolina?
Large engineering and manufacturing employers in South Carolina with documented H-1B visa sponsorship histories include Fluor Corporation in Greenville, Duke Energy across multiple service territories, and automotive manufacturers BMW and Michelin. Engineering consulting firms supporting the state's infrastructure and energy projects also sponsor regularly. Sponsorship is more common at larger firms with dedicated HR and legal resources than at smaller regional engineering practices.
Which visa types are most common for professional engineer roles in South Carolina?
The H-1B is the most common visa category for professional engineers in South Carolina, as PE roles in civil, mechanical, and electrical fields typically meet the specialty occupation requirement of a related bachelor's degree or higher. TN visas are available for Canadian and Mexican citizens in qualifying engineering disciplines. O-1A is an option for engineers with documented extraordinary achievement, though it requires substantial evidence.
Which cities in South Carolina have the most professional engineer sponsorship jobs?
Greenville leads South Carolina for professional engineer sponsorship activity, driven by its concentration of advanced manufacturing, automotive supply chain, and engineering consultancies. Columbia supports PE hiring through state infrastructure projects, utilities, and government contractors. Charleston's port expansion and aerospace sector generate civil and structural engineering demand. Spartanburg also sees consistent hiring tied to BMW's manufacturing operations and its surrounding supplier network.
How to find professional engineer visa sponsorship jobs in South Carolina?
Migrate Mate filters job listings specifically for roles with visa sponsorship, including professional engineer positions across South Carolina. Rather than sorting through unfiltered postings, you can search by state and discipline to surface employers actively hiring PE-level engineers and willing to sponsor. This is particularly useful for identifying firms in Greenville, Columbia, and Charleston that have current openings and a history of supporting international hires.
Are there state-specific considerations for professional engineers seeking sponsorship in South Carolina?
South Carolina requires Professional Engineer licensure through the South Carolina Board of Registration for Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors for roles involving public practice. International engineers on H-1B status can pursue PE licensure, though the process requires documented experience and passing the PE exam. Employers sponsoring visa petitions must meet DOL prevailing wage requirements for the specific engineering discipline and work location within South Carolina.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored professional engineer jobs in South Carolina?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
