Which companies sponsor visas for tax associates in Illinois?
The Big Four accounting firms, Deloitte, KPMG, PwC, and EY, are among the most consistent H-1B visa sponsors for tax associates in Illinois, particularly in Chicago. Regional firms like Grant Thornton and RSM also sponsor, as do large corporations with in-house tax departments such as Boeing, Abbott, and Caterpillar. Sponsorship frequency varies by firm size, practice group, and candidate qualifications.
Which visa types are most common for tax associate roles in Illinois?
The H-1B is the most common visa for tax associates in Illinois. Tax roles typically qualify as specialty occupations because they require at minimum a bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or a related field. Candidates from Canada or Mexico may qualify for TN visa status under the accountant category. Australian citizens may be eligible for the E-3 visa, which has no lottery and a separate annual cap.
Which cities in Illinois have the most tax associate sponsorship jobs?
Chicago accounts for the overwhelming majority of tax associate sponsorship jobs in Illinois. The Loop, River North, and the West Loop corridor house the Illinois offices of most major accounting firms and corporate tax departments. Suburban markets like Schaumburg, Downers Grove, and Oak Brook also have corporate employers with tax teams, though sponsorship activity there is less concentrated than in downtown Chicago.
How to find tax associate visa sponsorship jobs in Illinois?
Migrate Mate filters job listings specifically by visa sponsorship, so you can search for tax associate roles in Illinois without sorting through positions that don't offer sponsorship. The platform surfaces openings from accounting firms and corporate tax departments across Chicago and the broader Illinois market. Filtering by role and state helps identify which employers are actively hiring and willing to sponsor at any given time.
Are there any Illinois-specific considerations for tax associates seeking visa sponsorship?
Illinois follows federal H-1B prevailing wage rules, which tie required wages to DOL wage levels for the specific role and metro area. Chicago's prevailing wages for tax associates reflect a high-cost professional market, so employers must meet those benchmarks in the LCA. Illinois also has a strong pipeline of international accounting graduates from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and DePaul University, which influences how firms approach early-career sponsorship.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored tax associate jobs in Illinois?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
