Which companies and school districts sponsor visas for school nurses in Iowa?
The largest public school districts in Iowa are the most active employers for school nurses, including Des Moines Public Schools, Cedar Rapids Community School District, Davenport Community Schools, and Iowa City Community School District. Hospital systems with school-based health programs, such as UnityPoint Health and MercyOne, have also hired school nurses in partnership with district contracts. Sponsorship availability varies by district budget and staffing needs each hiring cycle.
Which visa types are most common for school nurse roles in Iowa?
H-1B visa is the most commonly used visa for school nurses in Iowa, as Registered Nurse positions with a BSN degree typically qualify as specialty occupations. Some nurses working under EB-3 immigrant visa petitions have also been sponsored by larger Iowa districts. TN visa status is available for Canadian and Mexican nurses under USMCA. J-1 visa exchange visitor visas are occasionally used but come with restrictions that limit long-term employment.
Which cities in Iowa have the most school nurse visa sponsorship jobs?
Des Moines has the highest concentration of school nurse openings due to the size of its public school district and the presence of major healthcare systems. Cedar Rapids, Davenport, Iowa City, and Sioux City round out the top markets, each supported by substantial school enrollment numbers. Rural districts throughout central and western Iowa also actively recruit school nurses but have historically had fewer resources for visa sponsorship processing.
How to find school nurse visa sponsorship jobs in Iowa?
Migrate Mate is the most direct way to find school nurse roles in Iowa that include visa sponsorship. You can filter specifically by the school nurse role and Iowa to see verified sponsoring employers without sorting through listings that don't offer work visa support. Because school districts post positions on irregular schedules tied to the academic year, checking Migrate Mate regularly between February and May gives you the best window into active openings.
Are there state-specific requirements or considerations for school nurses seeking sponsorship in Iowa?
Iowa requires school nurses to hold a valid Iowa Registered Nurse license issued by the Iowa Board of Nursing, and many districts also require or prefer a School Nurse endorsement through the Iowa Department of Education. Internationally trained nurses must have their credentials evaluated and may need to complete NCLEX-RN before licensure. Employers initiating H-1B sponsorship must certify that the offered wage meets prevailing wage standards set by the Department of Labor for the relevant Iowa county.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored school nurse jobs in Iowa?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
