Which companies sponsor visas for physicians in Maine?
MaineHealth and Northern Light Health are the two largest health systems in Maine and have established histories of sponsoring visas for physicians. Smaller employers including Penobscot Community Health Care, Down East Community Hospital, and various federally qualified health centers (FQHCs) across rural Maine also sponsor international physicians, particularly for primary care and psychiatry roles in underserved areas.
Which visa types are most common for physician roles in Maine?
The J-1 visa through the Exchange Visitor Program is widely used for physicians completing residency or fellowship training in Maine. The H-1B visa is the primary route for employed physicians after training. Physicians working in Health Professional Shortage Areas may qualify for a J-1 visa waiver through the Conrad 30 program, allowing them to remain in the U.S. with an employer-sponsored H-1B.
Which cities in Maine have the most physician sponsorship jobs?
Portland is Maine's largest city and home to Maine Medical Center, the state's busiest hospital, making it the top market for physician sponsorship opportunities. Bangor is the second major hub, anchored by Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center. Beyond these cities, rural areas including Presque Isle, Machias, and Calais have consistent demand due to federally designated provider shortage designations.
How to find physician visa sponsorship jobs in Maine?
Migrate Mate filters physician roles in Maine specifically by visa sponsorship, so you're not sorting through listings that don't apply to international candidates. Given Maine's concentration of sponsorship activity within a small number of large health systems, searching by employer type alongside location on Migrate Mate helps identify both urban hospital roles and rural FQHC positions that actively support H-1B visa and J-1 visa waiver candidates.
Are there state-specific considerations for physicians seeking sponsorship in Maine?
Maine participates in the Conrad 30 J-1 waiver program, which allows up to 30 J-1 physicians per year to obtain waivers by committing to work in underserved areas of the state for at least three years. The Maine Office of Rural Health and Primary Care administers the program and coordinates with the Maine Bureau of Medical Services. Physicians in shortage-designated areas often find that rural Maine employers are more flexible with sponsorship support than urban counterparts nationally.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored physician jobs in Maine?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
