Which companies sponsor visas for physicians in West Virginia?
WVU Medicine (West Virginia University Health System) and Charleston Area Medical Center are the most active sponsors, along with Cabell Huntington Hospital and smaller regional health systems affiliated with national groups. Federally Qualified Health Centers across the state also sponsor physicians, particularly for J-1 visa Conrad 30 waiver positions targeting rural and medically underserved areas.
Which visa types are most common for physician roles in West Virginia?
J-1 and H-1B visas are the two dominant categories for international physicians in West Virginia. Many physicians enter through J-1 exchange visitor status for residency or fellowship, then transition via the Conrad 30 waiver program, which requires a three-year service commitment in a medically underserved area. H-1B sponsorship is common for attending physician roles at larger hospital systems.
Which cities in West Virginia have the most physician sponsorship jobs?
Morgantown has the highest concentration of sponsored physician roles, anchored by WVU Medicine and its academic medical center. Charleston follows closely given the presence of Charleston Area Medical Center and affiliated practices. Huntington is a third significant hub through Marshall Health and Cabell Huntington Hospital. Rural counties throughout the state also generate sponsorship opportunities, especially under J-1 waiver programs.
How to find physician visa sponsorship jobs in West Virginia?
Migrate Mate lists physician roles in West Virginia filtered specifically for visa sponsorship, covering positions at health systems, academic medical centers, and community health organizations across the state. Searching by specialty on Migrate Mate helps narrow results to primary care, hospitalist, or subspecialty openings where sponsoring employers are actively recruiting internationally trained physicians.
Are there state-specific considerations for physicians seeking visa sponsorship in West Virginia?
West Virginia participates in the Conrad 30 J-1 waiver program, which allows the state to recommend up to 30 waivers per year for physicians who commit to working in underserved areas. The state consistently prioritizes primary care, psychiatry, and general surgery. Physicians should verify West Virginia Medical License eligibility early, as licensing timelines can affect start dates and employer sponsorship planning.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored physician jobs in West Virginia?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
