Which visa types are most common for physician roles in Wisconsin?
The J-1 visa and H-1B visa are the two most common visa categories for physicians in Wisconsin. The J-1 visa is widely used for residency and fellowship training through academic medical centers like UW Health and the Medical College of Wisconsin. The H-1B is more common for attending physician positions. Physicians who completed J-1 training and fulfilled a two-year home residency requirement, or obtained a waiver, may transition to H-1B status with a sponsoring employer.
Which companies sponsor visas for physicians in Wisconsin?
UW Health, Froedtert Health, Marshfield Clinic Health System, Ascension Wisconsin, and Aurora Health Care are among the largest physician employers in Wisconsin with established visa sponsorship programs. Federally Qualified Health Centers and Critical Access Hospitals in rural areas also sponsor physicians, particularly through the J-1 Conrad 30 waiver program, which places international medical graduates in medically underserved communities across the state.
How to find physician visa sponsorship jobs in Wisconsin?
Migrate Mate filters physician job listings in Wisconsin specifically to roles where employers are open to visa sponsorship, saving you the time of filtering through postings that don't apply to your situation. You can search by specialty and location to find opportunities at health systems in Milwaukee, Madison, Green Bay, and rural areas. Migrate Mate is particularly useful for identifying which Wisconsin employers have an active history of sponsoring H-1B or J-1 physicians.
Which cities in Wisconsin have the most physician sponsorship jobs?
Milwaukee and Madison account for the largest share of physician sponsorship jobs in Wisconsin, anchored by Froedtert Health, Aurora Health Care, UW Health, and their affiliated academic programs. Green Bay and Appleton have a growing presence through Bellin Health and ThedaCare. Marshfield, though smaller, is a significant hub due to Marshfield Clinic's multi-site network. Rural areas across the state also post openings, often tied to J-1 Conrad 30 waiver positions in underserved communities.
Are there state-specific considerations for physicians seeking visa sponsorship in Wisconsin?
Wisconsin participates in the J-1 Conrad 30 waiver program, which allows international medical graduates on J-1 visas to waive the two-year home residency requirement by committing to work in a designated underserved area for at least three years. The Wisconsin Department of Health Services administers the state's Conrad 30 slots annually. Physicians pursuing this pathway must secure a full-time employment offer from an approved facility before the waiver application is submitted.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored physician jobs in Wisconsin?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
