Which companies sponsor visas for physicians in North Carolina?
Duke Health, UNC Health Care, Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist, Novant Health, and WakeMed are among the most active physician sponsors in North Carolina. Federally Qualified Health Centers across rural counties, including those in the western mountains and eastern coastal plain, also sponsor international physicians, particularly under J-1 visa Conrad 30 waivers tied to underserved area placements.
Which visa types are most common for physician roles in North Carolina?
The J-1 Conrad 30 waiver and the H-1B visa are the two most common pathways for international physicians in North Carolina. J-1 waiver positions require a three-year service commitment in a Health Professional Shortage Area or Medically Underserved Area. The H-1B is cap-subject but frequently used by large hospital systems and academic medical centers for specialist and faculty roles.
Which cities in North Carolina have the most physician sponsorship jobs?
Charlotte, Raleigh-Durham, and Greensboro account for the highest concentration of physician sponsorship opportunities, driven by large hospital systems and growing urban populations. Durham stands out for academic medicine through Duke Health and UNC Health. Rural areas across the eastern Coastal Plain and Appalachian counties also post sponsored positions, particularly for primary care and internal medicine physicians seeking J-1 waivers.
How to find physician visa sponsorship jobs in North Carolina?
Migrate Mate filters physician roles specifically to North Carolina employers who sponsor work visas, saving you from sorting through listings that offer no immigration support. Search by specialty and city to surface opportunities at health systems like Duke, Novant, and UNC Health, as well as rural FQHC positions that qualify for J-1 Conrad 30 waivers. Creating an account lets you track new postings as they go live.
Are there state-specific considerations for physicians seeking visa sponsorship in North Carolina?
North Carolina participates in the Conrad 30 J-1 waiver program, which allocates up to 30 waivers annually for international medical graduates who commit to working in underserved areas. The state Medical Board requires ECFMG certification and a valid USMLE sequence for licensure. Physicians targeting academic roles should note that Duke, UNC, and Wake Forest have established international faculty hiring pipelines that are familiar with H-1B and O-1 visa sponsorship processes.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored physician jobs in North Carolina?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
