Which visa types are most common for physician roles in Pennsylvania?
The H-1B visa is the most common visa for physicians in Pennsylvania, as physician roles qualify as specialty occupations requiring a medical degree. The J-1 visa waiver pathway is also widely used, allowing international medical graduates who completed J-1 residency or fellowship training to transition to employment-based status by fulfilling a service obligation, often through programs at Pennsylvania health systems or in underserved communities.
Which companies sponsor visas for physicians in Pennsylvania?
UPMC, Penn Medicine, Jefferson Health, Geisinger, Temple Health, and WellSpan Health are among the larger Pennsylvania health systems with documented histories of sponsoring work visas for physicians. Academic medical centers affiliated with the University of Pennsylvania, Thomas Jefferson University, and Penn State College of Medicine also regularly sponsor international physicians for both clinical and research-focused roles.
How to find physician visa sponsorship jobs in Pennsylvania?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for international physicians and other professionals seeking visa sponsorship roles in the United States. You can filter by Pennsylvania and search for physician positions to see employers actively open to sponsorship. This saves significant time compared to manually reviewing individual health system career pages to identify which roles include sponsorship.
Which cities in Pennsylvania have the most physician sponsorship jobs?
Philadelphia and Pittsburgh account for the highest concentration of physician sponsorship opportunities in Pennsylvania, driven by their large academic medical centers and multi-hospital health systems. Hershey is notable for Penn State Health and its affiliated medical school. Smaller cities including Danville, home to Geisinger's flagship campus, and Harrisburg also generate consistent physician hiring with sponsorship availability.
Are there state-specific considerations for international physicians pursuing sponsorship in Pennsylvania?
Pennsylvania participates in the Conrad 30 J-1 waiver program, which allows each state to sponsor up to 30 J-1 waiver positions annually, prioritizing placements in Health Professional Shortage Areas. The Pennsylvania Department of Health administers this program. International medical graduates pursuing this pathway should confirm that their prospective employer and practice location meet the state's eligibility requirements before applying.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored physician jobs in Pennsylvania?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
