Primary Purpose
The Director of Business Development is responsible for driving net-new revenue growth for Emmes by identifying, developing, and closing strategic clinical research opportunities across the company's core specialties, including Hematology and Oncology, Ophthalmology, and Vaccines and Infectious Disease. This is a high-impact, externally facing commercial role for a proven hunter who can open doors, create opportunities before a formal procurement process begins, and position Emmes as a strategic partner early in sponsors' development planning. The role requires a business development leader who is highly proactive, commercially aggressive, relationship-driven, and comfortable navigating long, complex sales cycles in biotech and pharma.
Responsibilities
- Drive net-new business development by securing new sponsor relationships and expanding Emmes' presence in targeted biotech and pharmaceutical accounts.
- Build and manage a high-quality pipeline of qualified opportunities, with strong emphasis on identifying programs before formal RFP issuance and before CRO shortlists are finalized.
- Develop and execute territory, account, and opportunity strategies that increase early access to sponsor clinical development discussions, including protocol planning, study design, operational strategy, and vendor evaluation.
- Leverage existing relationships, market intelligence, conference activity, and industry networks to uncover emerging clinical programs and create opportunities well in advance of procurement events.
- Differentiate Emmes' capabilities in scientific partnership, operational delivery, digital and AI-enabled CRO services, and therapeutic depth to win competitive opportunities.
- Meet or exceed annual sales goals for new-logo revenue, total signed awards, and qualified pipeline generation.
- Serve as a strategic commercial leader in Emmes' core therapeutic areas, with broad familiarity across the portfolio and recognized subject-matter depth in Ophthalmology.
- Partner closely with therapeutic area, operational, and executive leadership teams to shape compelling win strategies and customer-specific solutions.
- Lead client meetings, capability presentations, strategic account reviews, and bid defense activities to advance and close new business opportunities.
- Maintain disciplined CRM hygiene, opportunity tracking, competitive intelligence reporting, and account planning to support forecasting accuracy and commercial execution.
- Monitor competitor activity, awarded studies, and sponsor buying patterns to reduce missed opportunities and improve Emmes' ability to engage earlier in the decision cycle.
- Perform other duties as needed to support Emmes' broader growth strategy.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor's degree required in a scientific, clinical, healthcare, or business discipline; advanced degree preferred.
- Minimum 5 years of business development experience, with substantial direct experience selling CRO services to biotech and/or pharmaceutical sponsors.
- Prior CRO industry experience is required.
- Demonstrated track record of winning new business, opening new accounts, and expanding commercial relationships in complex, consultative sales environments.
- Experience engaging sponsor decision-makers at the C-suite levels across clinical development, clinical operations, procurement, and executive leadership.
- Strong understanding of the clinical development lifecycle and how CROs are engaged before, during, and after formal sourcing processes.
- Demonstrated success in the Ophthalmology therapeutic area.
- Proven ability to identify, qualify, shape, and close complex CRO opportunities with long sales cycles and multiple stakeholders.
- Strong network across biotech and pharma with the ability to convert relationships into early commercial access.
- Ability to discuss study objectives, trial design considerations, operational models, and sponsor priorities in a commercially credible and scientifically informed manner.
- Strong presentation, proposal strategy, negotiation, and interpersonal skills.
- High level of discipline in CRM usage, pipeline management, forecasting, and opportunity planning.
- Strong command of Microsoft Office and CRM platforms.
- Ability to travel up to 50% travel to sponsor, industry, and corporate locations.

Which companies sponsor visas for customer success directors in Maryland?
Maryland's strongest sponsors for customer success director roles include cybersecurity and federal tech firms such as Tenable, Leidos, SAIC, and CrowdStrike, along with healthcare IT companies operating out of the Baltimore metro. Larger enterprise SaaS companies with Maryland offices also have established H-1B sponsorship histories. Sponsorship willingness is more common at mid-to-large companies with dedicated HR and legal infrastructure than at early-stage startups.
Which visa types are most common for customer success director roles in Maryland?
The H-1B is the most common visa for customer success directors in Maryland, provided the role is structured as a specialty occupation requiring a bachelor's degree or higher in a specific field such as business, marketing, or information systems. L-1A intracompany transferee visas are also relevant for candidates moving from a foreign affiliate into a U.S. managerial role. O-1 visas occasionally apply for candidates with demonstrated extraordinary achievement in the field.
How to find customer success director visa sponsorship jobs in Maryland?
Migrate Mate is the most direct way to find customer success director roles in Maryland where employers are open to visa sponsorship. Rather than filtering through thousands of generic postings, Migrate Mate surfaces positions specifically tagged for sponsorship, saving time for candidates on H-1B, OPT, or other work authorization. Filtering by Maryland and the customer success director role type narrows results to the Baltimore-Washington corridor where hiring is most active.
Which cities in Maryland have the most customer success director sponsorship jobs?
Bethesda, Rockville, and the broader Montgomery County area account for the highest concentration of customer success director openings in Maryland, driven by the density of federal contractors and enterprise technology firms. Baltimore also has a meaningful share, particularly in healthcare IT and fintech. Columbia and Annapolis see smaller but steady demand from mid-market SaaS companies serving government and commercial clients.
Are there state-specific or role-specific factors that affect sponsorship for customer success directors in Maryland?
Maryland's large federal contracting sector creates a nuance worth understanding: some customer success director roles tied to government contracts require security clearances, which are generally not accessible to foreign nationals who aren't permanent residents or citizens. This narrows the pool of sponsoring employers to those serving commercial markets or unclassified federal programs. Candidates from universities like University of Maryland and Johns Hopkins also feed into Maryland's tech hiring pipeline, so competition for sponsored roles can be meaningful.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored customer success director jobs in Maryland?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
