INTRODUCTION
The Associate Director of Development is a frontline fundraiser responsible for the qualification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of major gift prospects. The Associate Director of Development will identify, engage, and solicit donors at all life stages, including prospect research, development of effective solicitation strategies and stewardship of donors throughout the major giving process. The Associate Director will typically maintain a donor portfolio with a focus on gifts of $50,000 or above. The Associate Director may require frequent travel and meetings on and off campus during regular and non-traditional business hours and is expected to operate with high levels of autonomy.
The Institute for Basic Biomedical Sciences is engaged in a transformative opportunity to develop and implement a vision for a new Life Sciences Building (LSB) that will create a modernized ecosystem for discovery research spanning multiple schools, departments, and divisions across Johns Hopkins University and Medicine. The goals of this project are to:
- Revitalize and develop basic science research facilities
- Create cross-departmental scientific neighborhoods to turbocharge the pace, scope, and impact of research
- Solve the most pressing questions about how biology sustains life and dysfunction gives rise to disease
To secure philanthropic support to harness the full potential of this opportunity, the Associate Director will work with the Executive Director of Development to implement fundraising strategies that support the research and educational needs of the LSB and the basic sciences ecosystem. The Associate Director will identify, cultivate, solicit and steward annual and major gifts, primarily focusing on graduate alumni and former postdocs and unaffiliated prospects. The Associate Director will work with the Executive Director and IBBS faculty, as well as across departments and schools, and will lead fundraising efforts for select programs and initiatives.
Travel is required.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities:
- Identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward a prospect pool for new and existing annual and major gifts.
- Design and implement development strategies to build a portfolio, involving relevant colleagues where necessary.
- Determine annual work plan goals in consultation with departmental/divisional development leadership.
- Track fundraising activity in the CRM.
- Plan and execute solicitation strategies leading to annual and major gifts.
- Prepare proposals, solicitation letters, gift agreements, and other development materials for prospects and donors that articulate Johns Hopkins University’s needs, values, and ambitions.
- Develop and maintain comprehensive understanding of department or division mission, history, teaching, research, and/or clinical programs to effectively communicate funding opportunities. Learn and actively refresh knowledge of school/divisional/departmental collaborative partnerships, priorities, and shared goals.
- Proactively communicate with major prospects and donors about specific ways to give, both current and deferred, to maximize gift and tax benefits.
- Complete in-person and virtual donor visits each fiscal year. Goals for visits and other KPIs will be set by school/division/business unit leadership.
- Develop and participate in implementing annual stewardship plans for donors.
- Develop and maintain strong, trust-based partnerships with colleagues across the institution.
- Work with faculty and institutional leaders to engage them as fundraising partners in identifying, cultivating, and soliciting prospective donors. Staff, train, and successfully guide internal stakeholders through the development process.
- Partner with team members on the planning and executions of development related activities for the department including professorship dedications, lectureships, and other stewardship events.
- Participate and engage in team-wide activities, meetings, events, and knowledge-sharing.
- Represent school/division on committees and at institution-wide programming where appropriate.
- Analyze data at a high level, identify prospects, demonstrate activity, and track progress toward work plan goals.
- Participate in special projects, programs, initiatives as assigned.
- Other duties as assigned.
In addition to the duties described above, the Associate Director of Development will:
- Develop a comprehensive understanding of all trainee programs under the auspices of the IBBS/SOM and work with the Executive Director of Development and faculty leaders in building and implementing a comprehensive development and engagement plan.
- Assist with coordination and staffing of the IBBS Advisory Council, as well as with the identification and recruitment strategy for new members, in partnership with the Executive Director of Development, department directors, and the Director of the IBBS.
- Work with the Executive Director of Development to advance a comprehensive program to identify and qualify new prospects with a focus on graduate alumni, manage a pipeline of new prospects and new prospects, initiate gift strategies, cultivate relationships, and solicit, upgrade and steward prospects through personal and virtual visits and written communication.
- Foster partnerships with other departments in the School of Medicine, other schools and programs involved in the LSB, Foundation Relations, Prospect Management and Research, and Gift Planning to identify joint-interest donor opportunities.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor's degree.
- Three years of related experience, with one year of professional experience.
- Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education beyond a high school diploma/graduation equivalent, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Advanced degree.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook).
LOCATION
Location: Hybrid: On-site 3-4 days a week
COMPENSATION
- Starting Salary Range: Minimum: $62,899.92 - Maximum: $110,100 (targeted salary: $104k-110k; commensurate with experience)

The referenced base salary range represents the low and high end of Johns Hopkins University’s salary range for this position. Not all candidates will be eligible for the upper end of the salary range. Exact salary will ultimately depend on multiple factors, which may include the successful candidate's geographic location, skills, work experience, market conditions, education/training and other qualifications. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE EQUIVALENCY
Please refer to the job description above to see which forms of equivalency are permitted for this position. If permitted, equivalencies will follow these guidelines: JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.
