Which companies sponsor visas for mechanics in Michigan?
Michigan's largest visa sponsors for mechanic roles include Ford Motor Company, General Motors, Stellantis, and major automotive suppliers like Magna International and BorgWarner. Large dealership groups, aerospace maintenance firms near Detroit Metro Airport, and heavy equipment companies also appear in sponsorship records. Sponsorship is more common at large, established employers with dedicated HR and legal infrastructure than at independent repair shops.
Which visa types are most common for mechanic roles in Michigan?
The H-2B visa is the most common pathway for non-specialty mechanic roles, covering temporary non-agricultural workers when U.S. workers are unavailable. For highly specialized roles, such as advanced automotive diagnostics or aerospace mechanics, employers may pursue H-1B visa sponsorship if the position requires a bachelor's degree equivalent. TN visas are available to Canadian and Mexican nationals in qualifying engineering-adjacent mechanic classifications under USMCA.
Which cities in Michigan have the most mechanic sponsorship jobs?
Detroit and its surrounding metro communities, including Dearborn, Warren, and Auburn Hills, account for the largest share of mechanic sponsorship activity due to the concentration of automotive OEMs and Tier 1 suppliers. Grand Rapids has a growing manufacturing base with fleet and industrial mechanic demand. Lansing, home to GM assembly operations, and Flint also see recurring openings for mechanical technicians with employer sponsorship.
How to find mechanic visa sponsorship jobs in Michigan?
Migrate Mate is the most direct way to find mechanic visa sponsorship jobs in Michigan. The platform filters job listings specifically to employers who have demonstrated a willingness to sponsor work visas, so you can focus on roles at Ford, GM, Stellantis suppliers, and other Michigan employers without sifting through listings that exclude international candidates. Search by role and state to see current openings filtered to Michigan mechanic positions.
Are there state-specific considerations for mechanic visa sponsorship in Michigan?
Michigan employers sponsoring mechanics must meet Department of Labor prevailing wage requirements, which are set at the regional level and reflect Detroit metro and West Michigan market rates separately. Michigan's automotive industry tends to favor candidates with manufacturer-specific certifications, such as ASE credentials or OEM training programs. Candidates with experience on U.S.-market vehicle platforms or familiarity with Big Three production processes have a meaningful advantage in sponsorship conversations.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored mechanic jobs in Michigan?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
