Beyond these established names, the Twin Cities supports a growing number of health tech and fintech companies that regularly onboard international students during their OPT period. Sponsorship practices vary by company and role, so verifying directly with each employer is important.
Which cities in Minnesota have the most technology F-1 OPT sponsorship jobs?
Minneapolis and St. Paul together form the primary technology hiring market in Minnesota, accounting for the large majority of OPT-eligible roles in the state. Minneapolis in particular hosts corporate headquarters for major employers and a dense startup ecosystem. Suburban areas including Minnetonka, Eden Prairie, and Bloomington also have significant technology employer presences, particularly in healthcare IT and enterprise software.
What types of technology roles typically qualify for F-1 OPT sponsorship in Minnesota?
Roles that are directly related to a STEM field of study qualify for standard 12-month OPT, while software engineering, data science, cybersecurity, and computer systems analysis positions often qualify for the 24-month STEM OPT extension. Minnesota employers in healthcare IT, financial technology, and enterprise software commonly hire for these positions. The role must be paid and directly tied to your degree program to count toward OPT authorization.

Are there any Minnesota-specific considerations for F-1 OPT technology sponsorship?
Minnesota's technology sector has a strong concentration in health IT and medical devices, meaning many OPT roles may involve HIPAA-regulated environments or require background checks that can take additional time. International students at University of Minnesota campuses benefit from a well-resourced international student office familiar with OPT timelines.
