Which science and research companies sponsor F-1 STEM OPT visas in New York?
New York hosts a wide range of science and research employers with documented STEM OPT sponsorship activity. Pharmaceutical companies such as Pfizer and Bristol Myers Squibb maintain significant research operations in the state, alongside biotech firms, environmental science consultancies, and clinical research organizations. Major academic medical centers including Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and Weill Cornell Medicine also hire OPT-authorized research staff regularly.
Which cities in New York have the most science and research F-1 STEM OPT sponsorship jobs?
New York City concentrates the largest share of science and research STEM OPT positions, particularly in biomedical research, pharmaceutical development, and environmental science. The Hudson Valley region, including Tarrytown and Sleepy Hollow, has a notable cluster of life sciences employers. Albany and Buffalo also offer opportunities in public health research, materials science, and university-affiliated research programs at institutions such as SUNY and the University at Buffalo.
What types of science and research roles typically qualify for F-1 STEM OPT sponsorship?
Roles that qualify generally fall under STEM-designated Classification of Instructional Programs codes recognized by the Department of Homeland Security. In science and research, these commonly include positions such as research scientist, computational biologist, chemist, environmental scientist, data scientist within research settings, and laboratory research associate. The position must be directly related to the student's STEM degree field, and the employer must be enrolled in E-Verify to participate in the 24-month STEM OPT extension program.
How do I find science and research F-1 STEM OPT sponsorship jobs in New York?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for F-1 STEM OPT job seekers and filters science and research positions in New York by verified sponsorship history, so you can focus on employers who have previously supported OPT authorization rather than applying broadly. You can filter by industry, location, and visa type to surface relevant openings at pharmaceutical companies, research institutions, and biotech employers across the state without guessing about sponsorship eligibility.
Are there any New York-specific considerations for F-1 STEM OPT sponsorship in science and research?
New York State has a strong cluster of life sciences and academic research employers, many of whom are experienced with STEM OPT authorization and E-Verify compliance. However, not every research role at a New York institution will qualify: the position must align with your specific STEM degree field, and your Designated School Official must recommend the extension before work begins. New York City employers in regulated industries such as clinical research may also require additional credentialing beyond STEM OPT authorization.
