Which construction companies sponsor F-1 STEM OPT visas in New York?
Large general contractors and engineering firms with significant New York project pipelines tend to have the strongest F-1 STEM OPT sponsorship track records. Companies like Turner Construction, AECOM, Skanska, Gilbane Building Company, and WSP USA have filed Labor Condition Applications for construction and engineering roles in New York. Sponsorship is more common at firms managing large-scale infrastructure, commercial, or public works projects where STEM-trained talent in BIM, civil engineering, and construction technology is in demand.
Which cities in New York have the most construction F-1 STEM OPT sponsorship jobs?
New York City accounts for the majority of construction F-1 STEM OPT sponsorship activity in the state, driven by ongoing commercial development, transit infrastructure projects, and waterfront redevelopment. Albany sees hiring concentrated around state government construction programs and infrastructure contracts. Buffalo has grown as a sponsorship hub following major investment in semiconductor manufacturing facilities and regional infrastructure upgrades. Smaller markets like Rochester and Syracuse also have activity tied to university research and public works projects.
What types of construction roles typically qualify for F-1 STEM OPT sponsorship?
Roles that qualify for F-1 STEM OPT sponsorship must tie to a STEM-designated degree program and involve applying technical knowledge in a practical setting. In construction, this typically includes project engineer, BIM coordinator, civil engineer, construction technology specialist, sustainability analyst, and structural engineer positions. Roles focused primarily on field supervision or general project management without a direct STEM application are less likely to qualify. The specific degree-to-role match matters, and employers confirm this alignment when authorizing the OPT extension.
How do I find construction F-1 STEM OPT sponsorship jobs in New York?
Migrate Mate lets you filter construction and real estate jobs in New York specifically by F-1 STEM OPT sponsorship history, so you can identify employers who have a verified track record of sponsoring this visa type rather than relying on job postings that may not mention sponsorship at all. Filtering by industry and state narrows results to firms active in New York's construction market. You can also review employer-level filing data to assess how consistently a company has sponsored STEM OPT roles before applying.
Are there any New York-specific considerations for F-1 STEM OPT sponsorship in construction?
New York's prevailing wage laws apply to many public construction projects and can affect how employers structure compensation for STEM OPT hires on state-funded work. Employers on public works contracts must pay DOL-certified prevailing wages, which varies by county and role classification. New York City's building and infrastructure projects also tend to involve union jurisdictions, which can shape the types of roles open to STEM OPT workers. Confirming that an employer is enrolled in E-Verify is a USCIS requirement for all STEM OPT extensions, so that step applies regardless of the state.
