Waltham and Lexington host major pharmaceutical and defense research campuses. Worcester has a growing biomedical research presence anchored by UMass Medical School and the biotechnology corridor along Route 9. Lowell and Andover attract materials science and semiconductor research employers.
What types of science and research roles typically qualify for F-1 STEM OPT sponsorship in Massachusetts?
Roles with STEM-designated Classification of Instructional Programs codes that consistently qualify include research scientist, computational biologist, biostatistician, biochemist, materials scientist, data scientist in research settings, and laboratory analyst positions. Many life sciences employers in Massachusetts are enrolled in E-Verify as a condition of federal research contracts, which is a requirement for STEM OPT employers under federal regulations. Researchers working on federally funded grants should confirm that their specific project and employment classification align with STEM OPT eligibility before accepting an offer.
