Which education companies and institutions sponsor F-1 STEM OPT visas in Massachusetts?
Massachusetts education employers with documented F-1 STEM OPT sponsorship history include major research universities such as Harvard, MIT, Boston University, and Northeastern, alongside edtech companies headquartered in the Boston metro area. Employers who file Labor Condition Applications for STEM-designated roles in data science, software engineering, and instructional technology are the most consistent sponsors in this sector.
Which cities in Massachusetts have the most education F-1 STEM OPT sponsorship jobs?
Boston and Cambridge account for the largest share of education F-1 STEM OPT roles in Massachusetts, driven by the concentration of research universities and edtech startups in those cities. Worcester and Amherst also have sponsoring employers tied to their university ecosystems. For roles outside Boston, check whether the employer files LCAs for that specific location, as sponsorship capacity can vary by campus or office.
What types of education roles typically qualify for F-1 STEM OPT sponsorship?
Roles must fall under a STEM-designated Classification of Instructional Programs code on your degree. In the education sector, qualifying positions commonly include data analyst, learning engineer, instructional designer with a technology focus, software developer for edtech products, and research scientist roles. Administrative, advising, and general teaching positions rarely qualify unless they are explicitly tied to STEM-coded degree programs and job duties.

Are there any Massachusetts-specific or education-industry considerations for F-1 STEM OPT sponsorship?
Massachusetts requires E-Verify enrollment for employers sponsoring STEM OPT extensions, and your employer must have a formal training plan on file with your DSO. In the education sector, public universities may have additional HR approval layers before committing to sponsorship. Because many Massachusetts edtech companies are early-stage startups, confirm that the employer has completed E-Verify enrollment before accepting an offer tied to a STEM OPT extension.
