Which companies sponsor visas for social workers in North Carolina?
Large health systems are the most active sponsors, including UNC Health, Duke Health, Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist, and WakeMed. County departments of social services and nonprofit behavioral health organizations also hire international social workers, though sponsorship frequency varies by role type and licensure requirements. Clinical positions at hospital systems tend to offer more consistent sponsorship than community-based nonprofit roles.
Which visa types are most common for social work roles in North Carolina?
The H-1B is the most common visa for licensed clinical social workers and medical social workers, as these roles typically qualify as specialty occupations requiring a master's degree in social work. Some nonprofit and government-affiliated employers may access H-1B cap-exempt sponsorship. The O-1 is rarely applicable. Internationally educated social workers should also confirm that their credentials meet North Carolina Social Work Certification and Licensure Board requirements before applying.
Which cities in North Carolina have the most social work sponsorship jobs?
Charlotte, Raleigh, and Durham account for the largest share of social work sponsorship activity, driven by major health systems and university medical centers in those metro areas. Greensboro and Winston-Salem also have meaningful demand through behavioral health networks and hospital employment. Rural counties across the state often have vacancies but are less likely to offer visa sponsorship due to smaller administrative capacity.
How to find social work visa sponsorship jobs in North Carolina?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for international job seekers and filters social work roles in North Carolina by visa sponsorship eligibility, saving you from manually screening hundreds of postings. Because social work sponsorship depends heavily on employer type and licensure requirements, filtering by role and location on Migrate Mate helps you identify health systems and organizations that have an established history of sponsoring international hires in this field.
Are there state-specific requirements that affect visa sponsorship for social workers in North Carolina?
Yes. North Carolina requires licensure through the NC Social Work Certification and Licensure Board, and internationally educated applicants must have their credentials evaluated for equivalency. Employers initiating H-1B sponsorship must also file a Labor Condition Application certifying the offered wage meets Department of Labor prevailing wage standards for the specific role and county. These steps add time to the hiring process, so employers experienced with international hires are generally better positioned to complete sponsorship.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored social work jobs in North Carolina?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
