Which companies in Ohio sponsor visas for engineering interns?
Ohio's largest engineering intern sponsors include Honda Manufacturing of Alabama's Marysville plant, Procter and Gamble in Cincinnati, Parker Hannifin and Sherwin-Williams in Cleveland, and Battelle Memorial Institute in Columbus. Aerospace and defense contractors such as GE Aerospace in Cincinnati also hire engineering interns and have established processes for supporting F-1 OPT and CPT work authorization. Sponsorship availability varies by hiring cycle and role.
What visa types are most common for engineering interns in Ohio?
Most international engineering interns in Ohio work under F-1 CPT (Curricular Practical Training) during their degree or F-1 OPT (Optional Practical Training) after graduation. STEM OPT extends authorization by 24 months for qualifying engineering disciplines, giving employers and interns a longer runway. Some full-time conversion offers eventually lead to H-1B visa sponsorship, though that is a separate process requiring employer-initiated petitions.
Which Ohio cities have the most engineering intern visa sponsorship opportunities?
Columbus leads in volume, driven by a dense cluster of corporate headquarters, the presence of Ohio State University, and a growing tech sector. Cincinnati is strong in consumer goods, aerospace, and chemical engineering through employers like P&G and GE Aerospace. Cleveland concentrates opportunities in advanced manufacturing, healthcare technology, and materials science, with companies like Parker Hannifin and Cleveland-Cliffs actively hiring engineering interns.
How to find engineering intern visa sponsorship jobs in Ohio?
Migrate Mate filters engineering intern roles in Ohio specifically by visa sponsorship eligibility, which removes the guesswork of manually checking each employer's policy. Search by role and state to surface internships from Ohio-based companies that have a documented history of supporting international candidates on CPT, OPT, or STEM OPT. This is especially useful for students at Ohio State, University of Cincinnati, or Case Western Reserve who are approaching OPT deadlines.
Are there any Ohio-specific considerations for international engineering interns?
Ohio's heavy concentration of manufacturing and defense contractors means some engineering intern roles require compliance with International Traffic in Arms Regulations or Export Administration Regulations, which can restrict eligibility for certain visa holders. Students should confirm export control requirements with employers before accepting offers. Ohio State University and Case Western Reserve also have international student offices that coordinate with employers on CPT authorization, which can simplify the documentation process.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored engineering intern jobs in Ohio?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
