Which companies sponsor visas for professional engineers in Ohio?
Large engineering and manufacturing firms with established Ohio operations are among the most active sponsors. These include AECOM, Burns & McDonnell, Arcadis, and Honda of America in the automotive and civil sectors, as well as chemical companies like Dow and Sherwin-Williams near Cleveland. Federal defense contractors operating in Dayton, such as Leidos and Jacobs, also have documented H-1B sponsorship histories for licensed engineers.
Which visa types are most common for professional engineer roles in Ohio?
The H-1B is the most common visa for professional engineers in Ohio, as PE-licensed roles requiring a bachelor's degree in engineering qualify as specialty occupations. Canadian and Mexican nationals with engineering credentials frequently use the TN visa, which has a faster processing path. Engineers with extraordinary ability or a job offer from a multinational employer may also qualify for the O-1 or L-1 categories respectively.
Which cities in Ohio have the most professional engineer sponsorship jobs?
Columbus leads for civil and infrastructure engineering sponsorship, driven by ongoing transit, highway, and utility projects. Cleveland is a hub for structural, chemical, and environmental engineering tied to its industrial base. Cincinnati draws mechanical and process engineers through its manufacturing and consumer goods sector. Dayton has a concentration of aerospace and defense engineering roles connected to Wright-Patterson Air Force Base and its surrounding contractor ecosystem.
How to find professional engineer visa sponsorship jobs in Ohio?
Migrate Mate filters engineering job listings specifically by visa sponsorship availability, so you can browse professional engineer roles in Ohio without sorting through positions that won't support an international hire. The platform focuses on employers with active sponsorship histories, which is especially useful in Ohio where sponsorship activity varies significantly between civil infrastructure firms, automotive manufacturers, and defense contractors depending on their current project pipeline.
Are there any state-specific considerations for professional engineers seeking visa sponsorship in Ohio?
Ohio requires a state-issued PE license from the State Board of Registration for Professional Engineers and Surveyors to practice independently. International engineers often enter on an H-1B under an EIT or engineer-in-training designation before obtaining Ohio PE licensure, which typically requires passing the FE and PE exams plus four years of qualifying experience. Employers in Ohio's manufacturing corridor and ODOT-affiliated infrastructure projects tend to place particular value on candidates already enrolled in the PE licensure pathway.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored professional engineer jobs in Ohio?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
