Langston University is seeking a VP Academic Affairs (LU) to provide strategic leadership for comprehensive career services programs that support student career readiness, internship development, graduate outcomes, and employer engagement. The Director collaborates with academic departments, employers, alumni, and campus partners to prepare students for successful transitions from college to career or graduate study.
ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The Director of Career and Professional Development oversees career counseling, professional development programming, employer relations, career events, and career outcome assessment initiatives. The Director is responsible for creating inclusive, student-centered programs aligned with institutional goals and workforce trends.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Develop and implement a strategic vision for career and professional development services.
- Lead departmental planning, goal setting, assessment, and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Supervise student employees.
- Manage departmental budget, contracts, and operational resources.
- Oversee career advising for undergraduate and graduate students.
- Develop and implement career readiness programming that supports career exploration, resume and cover letter development, interview preparation, networking and personal branding, internship and job search strategies, and graduate school preparation.
- Promote equitable access to career opportunities and support services for diverse student populations.
- Build and maintain relationships with employers, alumni, government agencies, and nonprofit organizations.
- Expand internship, cooperative education, and experiential learning opportunities.
- Coordinate career fairs, employer information sessions, networking events, and on-campus recruiting.
- Partner with faculty and academic departments to integrate career readiness into the curriculum.
- Collaborate with academic affairs, student affairs, alumni relations, admissions, and advancement offices.
- Support institutional retention, persistence, and graduate success initiatives.
- Serve on university committees and represent the institution at professional conferences and community events.
- Track and analyze student engagement, internship participation, and post-graduation outcomes.
- Prepare annual reports and presentations on career outcomes and program effectiveness.
- Utilize labor market data and employment trends to inform programming and strategic planning.
- Oversee career services technology platforms such as Handshake or similar systems.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
- Master’s degree in Higher Education Administration, Counseling, Student Affairs, Human Resources, Business, or related field (degree must be conferred on or before agreed upon start date).
- Minimum of 3 years of progressively responsible experience in career services, student affairs, workforce development, or related higher education setting.
- Supervisory and leadership experience.
- Strong understanding of career development theory and college student development.
- Experience developing partnerships with employers and external stakeholders.
Certifications, Registrations, and/or Licenses:
Skills, Proficiencies, and/or Knowledge:
- Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Master’s degree in Higher Education Administration, Counseling, Student Affairs, Human Resources, Business, or related field.
- Experience in a college or university career center.
- Experience with assessment, accreditation, or institutional effectiveness initiatives.
- Experience working with diverse student populations and inclusive programming practices.
Certifications, Registrations, and/or Licenses:
- Certification as a Certified Career Services Provider (CCSP), Certified Master of Career Services (CMCS), Certified Supervisor of Career Practitioners (CSCP) or similar.

- Familiarity with NACE competencies and career readiness standards.
- Knowledge of internship and experiential learning program management.
