Which technology companies in Oregon sponsor F-1 OPT visas?
Intel is the largest technology employer in Oregon and has a long history of hiring international students on OPT at its Hillsboro campus. Other active sponsors include Daimler Trucks North America (which has a significant software engineering presence), Precision Castparts, and a range of Portland-area software companies and startups. Oregon Health & Science University also sponsors OPT workers in health technology and data roles.
Which cities in Oregon have the most technology F-1 OPT sponsorship jobs?
Portland is Oregon's primary technology hiring hub, with concentrations of software, data, and IT roles across the metro area. Hillsboro, roughly 20 miles west of Portland, is particularly significant for semiconductor and hardware engineering roles given Intel's large campus there. Beaverton and Lake Oswego also have notable technology employer presences. Eugene has a smaller but growing tech scene connected to the University of Oregon.
What types of technology roles typically qualify for F-1 OPT sponsorship in Oregon?
Roles in software engineering, data science, machine learning, cybersecurity, embedded systems, and semiconductor design are the most common F-1 OPT-eligible positions in Oregon. These roles align directly with STEM degree fields, making them eligible for the 24-month STEM OPT extension beyond the initial 12 months. Product management and UX research roles can also qualify when tied to a relevant STEM degree, though eligibility is assessed case by case.
How do I find technology F-1 OPT sponsorship jobs in Oregon?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for international students and filters technology jobs in Oregon by visa type, including F-1 OPT, so you're not sifting through listings from employers who won't sponsor. Beyond browsing Migrate Mate, attending Portland-area tech meetups and career fairs at Oregon State University or Portland State University can surface OPT-friendly employers that recruit locally and are familiar with the OPT process.
Are there state-specific considerations for F-1 OPT sponsorship in Oregon's technology sector?
Oregon does not have a state income tax on wages for residents who earn income outside the state, but standard federal OPT rules apply regardless of state. One practical consideration is Oregon's proximity to Washington state employers across the Portland metro area, meaning some technology roles are technically based in Vancouver, WA, where state income tax also does not apply. STEM OPT requires the employer to be enrolled in E-Verify, which most established Oregon technology companies already are.
