Tips for Finding OPT Jobs in Oregon
Target Oregon's semiconductor and hardware employers
Intel's massive Hillsboro campus is one of the largest private employers in Oregon and has a long track record of hiring F-1 OPT candidates in engineering and computer science roles. Prioritize companies in the Tualatin Valley tech corridor early in your search.
Leverage Oregon's university career networks
Oregon State University, University of Oregon, and Portland State University have employer partnerships with regional companies that actively recruit OPT students. Attend career fairs and use your university's OPT-specific job boards before your work authorization start date.
Search for roles that align with your OPT field
F-1 OPT requires your job to be directly related to your degree field. In Oregon, this often means computer science graduates targeting software or hardware roles and business graduates pursuing supply chain or operations positions at companies like Nike or Adidas.
Use Migrate Mate to filter for OPT-friendly employers
Migrate Mate lets you browse F-1 OPT sponsorship jobs in Oregon filtered by industry and employer type, which saves time identifying companies that have sponsored OPT candidates before rather than cold-applying to employers unfamiliar with the process.
Apply before your OPT authorization period begins
Oregon employers, especially smaller firms, may not be familiar with F-1 OPT timelines. Start your job search three to four months before your program end date so you have sufficient runway and can clearly explain your work authorization window to hiring managers.
Consider STEM OPT extension eligibility from day one
If you hold a STEM-designated degree, you may be eligible for a 24-month STEM OPT extension, which significantly increases your value to Oregon employers. Confirm your program's CIP code with your DSO and communicate your extension eligibility to employers upfront.

Which industries in Oregon sponsor the most F-1 OPT visas?
Technology and semiconductor manufacturing lead F-1 OPT sponsorship in Oregon, driven by large employers like Intel in Hillsboro. Software, electrical engineering, and computer hardware roles are especially common. Beyond tech, apparel and consumer goods companies headquartered in the Portland metro, along with healthcare systems and university research programs in Corvallis and Eugene, also sponsor OPT candidates regularly.
Which cities in Oregon have the most F-1 OPT sponsorship jobs?
Portland and the surrounding metro area, including Hillsboro and Beaverton, concentrate the largest share of F-1 OPT sponsorship opportunities in Oregon. Corvallis and Eugene have smaller but active markets tied closely to Oregon State University and the University of Oregon. Hillsboro specifically stands out because of Intel's campus and supporting technology suppliers in the Tualatin Valley.
What types of roles typically qualify for F-1 OPT sponsorship in Oregon?
Roles that qualify for F-1 OPT must be directly related to your degree field. In Oregon, this commonly includes software engineering, electrical engineering, data analysis, supply chain management, marketing analytics, and biomedical research. Generalist roles without a clear connection to a specific degree field are harder to justify under OPT requirements, so targeting positions with explicit technical or field-specific qualifications is advisable.
How do I find F-1 OPT sponsorship jobs in Oregon?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for international students and workers looking for visa sponsorship jobs, including F-1 OPT positions. You can search and filter by state and industry to find Oregon employers with a history of sponsoring OPT candidates. Combining Migrate Mate with your university's career services and employer networking events in Portland and Corvallis gives you the broadest reach.
Are there any Oregon-specific considerations for F-1 OPT sponsorship?
Oregon has no state income tax on wages, which can be relevant when comparing job offers, but the more important consideration is employer familiarity with OPT. Smaller Oregon employers outside the Portland metro may be less experienced with federal OPT and E-Verify requirements. If you're targeting a mid-size or startup employer, be prepared to walk your HR contact through the OPT authorization process and confirm they are enrolled in E-Verify before accepting an offer.
