Job Summary

The University of Portland is a primarily undergraduate institution comprising four professional schools and the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS), which houses our strong liberal arts Core Curriculum, required of all students. The School of Nursing & Health Innovations (SONHI) values a diversity of backgrounds and intellectual perspectives that create an environment of rich student mentoring within a community of scholars. The undergraduate and doctoral programs are built on the interconnectedness of individual social needs, clinical care, and community conditions. Successful candidates will have a high level of enthusiasm and engagement in innovative and inclusive pedagogy. The SONHI is ideally suited for candidates with a focus on cultivating human learning capacity and who are dedicated to addressing social determinants of health. The SONHI implements state of the art simulation in ambulatory, acute, and telemedicine facilities.

Core Duties

University of Portland faculty teach, advise and serve the School and the University. Successful candidates will demonstrate a commitment to excellent teaching, including attention to evidence-based instructional practices. All SONHI faculty teach across programs, as well as assist students in achievement of course objectives, guide student interaction in course-related work groups, grade coursework and provide feedback. SONHI faculty serve as academic advisors to SONHI students, working with assigned students to support their progress through the program of study.

Grounded in social justice, all SONHI faculty are expected to contribute to and be fully committed to meeting our school’s diversity, equity, and inclusion goals, in order to help create and sustain an anti-racist culture of equity and inclusivity and improve the recruitment, retention, and support of students, faculty, and staff from a broad range of backgrounds and life experiences.

Undergraduate baccalaureate generalist nurse faculty job responsibilities include teaching in a concept-based nursing curriculum across the lifespan and care continuum. Graduate faculty job responsibilities include teaching in the doctorate of nursing practice programs. Instructors typically teach 12 credit hours per semester.

Education & Experience

Required: Master of science in nursing or health-related field
Required: A minimum of three years of full-time patient care experience at the registered nurse level

Certifications & Licenses

Required: Active unencumbered license as an Oregon R.N. or eligible for licensure in Oregon.
Preferred: If a D.N.P., national certification as a Nurse Practitioner.

Physical Requirements

Frequently: sit, perform desk-based computer tasks; use fine manipulation and grasp; use a telephone; write by hand; sort and file paperwork.
Occasionally: stand and walk; twist; lift, carry, push, and pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds.
Occasionally: ability to attend events and activities on or off campus.
Frequently: ability to interact and communicate with members of the University and others as necessary.

Hours of employment: sometimes may require working flexible and/or longer hours, including nights and weekends, when necessitated by projects or class schedules.
