Which technology companies sponsor F-1 OPT visas in South Carolina?
Several technology and technology-adjacent employers in South Carolina have hired F-1 OPT workers, including Blackbaud, Benefitfocus, Booz Allen Hamilton, and SCANA's technology division. Defense contractors and healthcare IT firms operating near Charleston and Columbia also frequently bring on OPT candidates. Sponsorship availability varies by role and year, so confirming OPT acceptance directly with each employer during the application process is important.
Which cities in South Carolina have the most technology F-1 OPT sponsorship jobs?
Charleston leads in technology hiring activity in South Carolina, driven by cybersecurity, defense IT, and a growing startup scene. Columbia, home to the University of South Carolina and several state government technology contracts, is the second most active market. Greenville has an emerging technology presence tied to advanced manufacturing and automotive sector software. Most OPT-eligible tech roles in the state are concentrated across these three metro areas.
What types of technology roles typically qualify for F-1 OPT sponsorship in South Carolina?
Roles that directly relate to a STEM degree field are the strongest fit for F-1 OPT and STEM OPT extension eligibility. In South Carolina's technology sector, this includes software engineering, data analysis, cybersecurity, network administration, cloud infrastructure, and IT project management. Roles must be paid, full-time positions directly tied to your degree field. Internships or contract positions through staffing agencies may have additional restrictions depending on your school's authorization.
How do I find technology F-1 OPT sponsorship jobs in South Carolina?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for international students and filters technology jobs in South Carolina by visa type, including F-1 OPT. Rather than sorting through general job listings that rarely specify sponsorship policies, Migrate Mate surfaces roles where employers have a history of hiring OPT workers. You can filter by state and industry to focus your search on South Carolina technology companies actively open to F-1 OPT candidates.
Are there any state-specific considerations for F-1 OPT sponsorship in South Carolina's technology industry?
South Carolina has a significant defense and government contracting presence, particularly around Charleston and the Joint Base Charleston area. Many roles with these employers require U.S. citizenship or security clearance eligibility, which excludes most F-1 OPT holders. Focusing on private sector technology companies, healthcare IT firms, and financial technology employers in the state will generally yield more OPT-accessible opportunities. Verifying work authorization requirements before applying saves time.
