Which companies sponsor visas for product software engineers in Washington DC?
Government contractors and technology firms are among the most active visa sponsors for product software engineers in the DC area. Companies like Booz Allen Hamilton, Leidos, SAIC, Capital One, and Accenture Federal Services have consistent H-1B visa sponsorship histories. Larger commercial tech employers with DC offices, including Amazon Web Services and Microsoft, also sponsor product engineering roles regularly.
Which visa types are most common for product software engineer roles in Washington DC?
The H-1B is the most common visa for product software engineers in DC, as the role typically qualifies as a specialty occupation requiring a bachelor's degree in computer science, software engineering, or a related field. Candidates from Australia may be eligible for the E-3 visa. Canadian and Mexican nationals may qualify under the TN visa category. Those with extraordinary ability may pursue the O-1 visa.
Which cities in Washington DC have the most product software engineer sponsorship jobs?
Washington DC is a single city and federal district rather than a state with multiple cities. Most product software engineer sponsorship roles are concentrated in DC proper, with significant spillover into the broader National Capital Region, particularly Northern Virginia and suburban Maryland. Many employers list DC addresses but operate across this wider metro corridor, so searching the full area often surfaces more opportunities.
How to find product software engineer visa sponsorship jobs in Washington DC?
Migrate Mate filters job listings specifically by visa sponsorship availability, making it straightforward to find product software engineer roles in Washington DC without sifting through postings that don't support international candidates. You can search by role and location to surface relevant openings at government contractors, commercial tech firms, and mission-driven organizations across the DC metro area.
Are there any DC-specific considerations for product software engineers seeking visa sponsorship?
A notable factor in DC is that many employers, particularly federal contractors, require security clearances for product engineering roles. Clearances are generally not available to non-US citizens, which limits the sponsorable positions to commercial, civilian-facing products. Candidates should focus on employers building non-classified software products. University pipelines from Georgetown, George Mason, and Johns Hopkins also feed technical talent into the DC market, creating competition for sponsored roles.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored product software engineer jobs in Washington DC?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
