The Air Reservations team is seeking a highly motivated backend Software Engineer to own and develop highly scalable, reliable services that form the core engine for flight bookings. These services sit at the intersection of airline supply and traveler demand and are mission-critical to enabling travelers to book and service their flights across Expedia's global platform. If you thrive on building systems that process millions of transactions every month across hundreds of airline suppliers — where reliability and performance directly impact traveler experience — we want you to join our team!
In this role, you will:

- Own technical execution for complex initiatives, breaking down ambiguous problems into scalable solutions that meet product, engineering, and operational goals.
- Contribute to architecture and design decisions across services, driving maintainability, performance, resilience, and secure engineering practices in production environments.
- Partner effectively with engineers, product, and cross-functional stakeholders to deliver outcomes, improve development efficiency, and support fungibility across multiple technical domains.
- Improve operational excellence by monitoring service health, resolving production issues, strengthening observability, and using data to guide quality, reliability, and performance improvements.
- Safely integrate and operate AI/ML-enabled solutions that improve outcomes, including familiarity with AI-driven systems, tools, or workflows and applying AI/ML concepts to real world products.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related technical field; or Equivalent related professional experience.
- 5+ years of relevant professional experience
- Demonstrated ownership of a service or multiple services within a domain, with responsibility for delivery, quality, and operational performance.
- Strong software engineering fundamentals, including coding, low-level system design, API design, data modeling, testing, debugging, and secure development practices.
- Experience working across the software development lifecycle in distributed systems or service-oriented environments, with sound judgment in technical tradeoff decisions.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Background in building backend services in Java (Spring/Spring Boot or equivalent), including REST/gRPC (Protobuf) APIs, and components that are secure, scalable, and maintainable.
- Experience with databases (SQL and NoSQL), query design and optimization, and data modeling for backend services.
- Experience leading technical design for complex service enhancements or new capabilities within a domain, including scalable architecture, resilient APIs, and effective data models.
- Operational excellence mindset, with demonstrated experience in incident management, root-cause analysis (RCA), and improving reliability and availability metrics.
- Experience with CI/CD pipelines and deployment strategies, comprehensive automated testing with strong code coverage, and code review practices.
- Exposure to cloud platforms (preferably AWS) and container/orchestration technologies (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes).
- Experience with messaging and streaming technologies (e.g., Kafka, Kinesis, SQS) and asynchronous processing patterns.
- Background in e-commerce or other high-availability transactional systems is a plus.

Which companies sponsor visas for development engineers in Washington?
Microsoft, Amazon, Boeing, Google, and T-Mobile are among the most active sponsors for development engineer roles in Washington. Aerospace firms like Boeing and Spirit AeroSystems regularly sponsor engineers in Renton and Everett. Mid-size tech companies in Bellevue and Seattle also file H-1B visa petitions for development engineers, particularly in software-adjacent and systems engineering roles.
Which visa types are most common for development engineer roles in Washington?
The H-1B is the most common visa for development engineers in Washington, covering roles that require a bachelor's degree or higher in a specific technical field. Engineers from Canada or Mexico may qualify for the TN visa under the engineer category. Australian nationals can explore the E-3 visa, which has no annual lottery and is frequently used by engineers at Washington-based tech companies.
Which cities in Washington have the most development engineer sponsorship jobs?
Seattle and Bellevue account for the largest share of development engineer sponsorship activity in Washington, driven by the concentration of major tech employers. Redmond is significant due to Microsoft's headquarters campus. Renton and Everett see consistent demand from aerospace employers like Boeing. Kirkland also attracts engineering roles from mid-size and growth-stage tech companies.
How to find development engineer visa sponsorship jobs in Washington?
Migrate Mate filters development engineer jobs in Washington specifically to roles where employers have a documented history of visa sponsorship, saving you from applying to positions that won't support international candidates. You can search by city, such as Seattle or Bellevue, and filter by visa type. Migrate Mate is built for international engineers navigating the sponsorship process, not for U.S. citizens who don't need it.
Are there state-specific factors development engineers should know about Washington sponsorship jobs?
Washington has no state income tax, which affects how employers structure compensation packages, though prevailing wage requirements under H-1B rules are set at the federal level based on the specific occupation and metropolitan area. The University of Washington and Washington State University feed engineering talent pipelines that many local employers draw from, and companies familiar with OPT and STEM OPT extensions are common in the Seattle metro area.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored development engineer jobs in Washington?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
