Which companies sponsor visas for program assistants in West Virginia?
West Virginia University and Marshall University are among the most active sponsors for program assistant roles, particularly through H-1B petitions filed on behalf of research and academic program staff. WVU Medicine and Charleston Area Medical Center also appear in Department of Labor disclosure data for program-level positions. Federal agencies operating in the state, including those tied to energy and workforce development, occasionally sponsor qualifying roles as well.
What visa types are most common for program assistant roles in West Virginia?
The H-1B is the most common visa for program assistant positions in West Virginia, provided the role qualifies as a specialty occupation requiring at least a bachelor's degree in a specific field. Universities can file H-1B petitions as cap-exempt institutions, which means roles at WVU or Marshall are not subject to the annual lottery. The J-1 exchange visitor visa is also used for research and program roles at academic institutions in the state.
Which cities in West Virginia have the most program assistant sponsorship jobs?
Morgantown has the highest concentration of program assistant sponsorship activity in West Virginia, driven by West Virginia University and its affiliated research centers. Huntington is the next most active city, anchored by Marshall University and Cabell Huntington Hospital. Charleston, as the state capital, generates sponsorship activity through government agencies and nonprofit organizations, particularly in public health and workforce development program roles.
How to find program assistant visa sponsorship jobs in West Virginia?
Migrate Mate is the most direct way to find program assistant roles in West Virginia where employers are open to visa sponsorship. You can filter specifically by state and role type to surface relevant openings at universities, healthcare systems, and government-adjacent organizations. Because sponsorship is not always listed explicitly in job postings, Migrate Mate's database focuses on employers with documented sponsorship histories, which is particularly useful for program assistant searches in a smaller job market like West Virginia.
Are there state-specific considerations for program assistant visa sponsorship in West Virginia?
West Virginia's program assistant market is heavily tied to its university and healthcare systems, which means sponsorship activity follows academic hiring cycles, with peaks in spring and fall. Cap-exempt status at public universities like WVU is a meaningful advantage for international candidates since it removes the lottery as a barrier. The state's smaller overall job market means fewer total openings, but competition for sponsored roles at major institutions can be lower than in larger metropolitan states.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored program assistant jobs in West Virginia?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
