How to Get Visa Sponsorship as an Android Engineer
Highlight mobile-specific technical expertise
Emphasize Android SDK, Kotlin, Java, and mobile architecture patterns in your application. USCIS values specialized technical skills that distinguish mobile development from general programming roles.
Document your degree's relevance to mobile development
Computer science, software engineering, or electrical engineering degrees typically qualify. Include relevant coursework in mobile computing, software architecture, or app development if available.
Target companies with established mobile products
Focus on employers with significant Android app portfolios or mobile-first business models. These companies can more easily justify the specialty occupation requirement for Android Engineers.
Prepare for technical complexity questions
Be ready to explain advanced Android concepts like dependency injection, reactive programming, or performance optimization. Immigration officers may probe the technical depth of your role.
Consider E-3 visa advantages for Australians
Australian citizens can bypass H-1B lottery uncertainty with E-3 visas. Android Engineer positions easily meet E-3 specialty occupation requirements with faster processing times.
Leverage open source contributions and portfolio projects
Document your Android apps on Google Play Store or GitHub contributions. Published mobile applications demonstrate the specialized nature of your work beyond typical programming.

Get Access To All JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Do Android Engineers qualify for H-1B specialty occupation requirements?
Yes, Android Engineer roles typically qualify as specialty occupations under H-1B requirements. The position requires specialized knowledge of mobile development frameworks, Android SDK, and platform-specific programming languages like Kotlin and Java. A bachelor's degree in computer science, software engineering, or related technical field normally satisfies the educational requirement.
What degree do I need for Android Engineer visa sponsorship?
Computer science, software engineering, electrical engineering, or information technology degrees typically qualify for Android Engineer sponsorship. The degree should demonstrate relevant coursework in programming, software development, or computer systems. Three years of progressive work experience can substitute for one year of education if your degree doesn't directly align.
How do employers justify sponsoring Android Engineers over domestic candidates?
Employers must demonstrate they couldn't find qualified U.S. workers through recruitment efforts. Android Engineers with specialized skills in emerging technologies like AR/VR development, cross-platform frameworks, or performance optimization have stronger sponsorship cases. Companies often highlight the candidate's unique mobile expertise and project contributions.
Are Android Engineer H-1B applications more likely to get approved?
Android Engineer petitions generally have favorable approval rates because mobile development clearly requires specialized technical knowledge. USCIS recognizes the complexity of mobile app development, platform-specific programming, and user interface design. Strong applications include detailed job descriptions emphasizing technical complexity and degree relevance.
Can I change employers as an Android Engineer on H-1B status?
Yes, you can change employers through H-1B portability rules, but the new employer must file a new I-129 petition. You can start working for the new employer once they file the petition, before approval. The new role must still qualify as a specialty occupation with similar skill requirements to your original Android Engineer position.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored Android Engineer jobs?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
