Target firms with established sponsorship track records
Large public accounting firms and financial services companies file H-1B and E-3 petitions routinely. Smaller regional firms may sponsor but often lack in-house immigration infrastructure, which can slow the process significantly.
Confirm your degree field matches the role
USCIS requires a direct relationship between your degree and the position. A bachelor's in accounting, finance, or a closely related field is essential. A general business degree may face additional scrutiny during adjudication.
Understand the CPA credential's role in your petition
Holding or actively pursuing CPA licensure strengthens your H-1B specialty occupation case. It signals professional-level expertise that supports the argument the role requires a specifically degreed individual, not just any graduate.
Australian applicants should prioritize the E-3 pathway
The E-3 visa has no lottery, no annual cap backlog, and processes year-round. For Australian accounting professionals, it's a significantly more predictable route to U.S. employment than entering the H-1B lottery.
Get the job description reviewed before your employer files
Client Accounting Manager roles that emphasize general management over specialized accounting functions can face specialty occupation challenges. A description focused on technical accounting responsibilities reduces that risk considerably.
Canadian and Mexican applicants can use TN status
Accountants qualify under the TN visa category for Canadian and Mexican nationals. TN status can often be obtained at the border or port of entry, making it one of the fastest paths to starting work.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Client Accounting Manager role qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
Generally yes, provided the job description requires a bachelor's degree or higher in accounting, finance, or a directly related field as a minimum entry requirement. Roles where the employer accepts any degree field regardless of discipline are more vulnerable to USCIS specialty occupation challenges. A well-drafted job description focused on technical accounting responsibilities is critical to a successful petition.
Which visa is the best fit for an Australian applying for a Client Accounting Manager position?
The E-3 visa is the strongest option for Australian nationals. It's available exclusively to Australians, has a 10,500 annual allocation that has never been exhausted, and can be applied for directly at an Australian consulate without lottery exposure. Your employer files a Labor Condition Application with the Department of Labor, and you attend a consulate interview in Sydney, Melbourne, or Perth.
Do employers in public accounting and financial services commonly sponsor Client Accounting Managers?
Yes. The Big Four accounting firms and large financial services companies sponsor this role regularly under H-1B visa and E-3 programs. Mid-sized regional firms do sponsor but less frequently, and the process may take longer without dedicated immigration counsel. You can browse Client Accounting Manager roles with confirmed sponsorship availability on Migrate Mate.
Can I use work experience instead of a degree to qualify for visa sponsorship in this role?
Under the H-1B, USCIS allows three years of specialized work experience to substitute for each year of a four-year degree, but this equivalency is scrutinized closely for accounting roles where a specific credential is the industry norm. For TN status, Canadian and Mexican nationals must demonstrate an accounting degree or a combination of credentials. Experience alone is rarely sufficient without supporting educational documentation.
What approval rates look like for H-1B petitions in accounting and finance roles?
Accounting and finance roles have historically had solid H-1B approval rates compared to some other specialty occupation categories, largely because the degree-to-job nexus is well established. USCIS approval rates for business and financial operations occupations have generally stayed above 80 percent in recent fiscal years. Approval depends heavily on how the position is documented, not just the job title itself.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored Client Accounting Manager jobs?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
