Accountant Jobs in USA with Visa Sponsorship
Accounting is one of the most established pathways to visa sponsorship in the US, with the Big Four firms and major regional practices maintaining well-developed immigration programs for international accountants. The CPA credential is a significant differentiator for sponsorship candidates, as it demonstrates mastery of US-specific accounting standards and strengthens the specialty occupation argument. Many firms actively recruit international accountants and support them through the US CPA examination process after hiring. For detailed occupation requirements, see the O*NET profile.

How to Get Visa Sponsorship as an Accountant
Get your CPA license to lock in the specialty occupation argument
A CPA license is one of the strongest pieces of evidence for an H-1B specialty occupation case in accounting. USCIS recognizes state-licensed professions as inherently requiring specialized knowledge.
Apply to Big 4 firms for the strongest sponsorship infrastructure
Deloitte, PwC, EY, and KPMG are among the largest H-1B sponsors across all industries. Their immigration teams process thousands of petitions annually and have streamlined the entire visa process.
Use TN visa status if you're Canadian or Mexican
Accountant is specifically listed as a USMCA profession, making TN status one of the most straightforward paths to U.S. work authorization. You can apply at the border with a job offer letter and proof of qualifications.
Specialize in international tax or transfer pricing
These subfields are in high demand and harder to fill domestically. Employers can make a stronger case that your international background and expertise are essential to the role.
Plan around STEM OPT limitations in accounting
Most accounting degrees are not STEM-designated, so you'll likely have 12 months of standard OPT rather than 36. Start your job search early and target employers ready to file H-1B petitions within your first year.
Target mid-size firms with international tax practices
Firms outside the Big 4 still sponsor accountants, especially those serving multinational clients. Your multilingual skills and knowledge of foreign tax systems can be a genuine differentiator at these firms.

Get Access To All JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Do I need a U.S. CPA license to get visa sponsorship as an accountant?
A CPA license is not required for H-1B sponsorship, but it significantly strengthens your petition and hiring prospects. The CPA demonstrates mastery of U.S. GAAP, tax code, and auditing standards, which directly supports the specialty occupation argument. International candidates can sit for the CPA exam in most states, though educational requirements vary by state board. Many candidates complete their exams while on OPT status or before arriving in the U.S. by testing at international Prometric centers.
Which accounting firms are most likely to sponsor work visas?
The Big Four firms (Deloitte, PwC, EY, and KPMG) are among the most prolific H-1B sponsors across all industries, each filing hundreds of petitions annually. They have dedicated immigration teams and often recruit directly from U.S. accounting programs. Beyond the Big Four, regional firms like BDO, Grant Thornton, and RSM also sponsor, particularly for specialized roles in tax, audit, and advisory. Corporate finance departments at Fortune 500 companies round out the landscape.
What accounting specializations have the highest sponsorship rates?
Tax, audit, and advisory services are the most commonly sponsored practice areas because they require deep knowledge of U.S.-specific regulations. Forensic accounting and international tax are growing niches where international candidates bring particular value due to cross-border expertise. Transfer pricing roles at multinational firms are especially strong for sponsorship because the work inherently requires understanding multiple countries' tax systems.
Will my international accounting degree be accepted for H-1B sponsorship?
Yes, but you will need a credential evaluation from a NACES-approved agency to verify that your degree is equivalent to a U.S. bachelor's in accounting or a related field. Some states also require additional coursework to meet the 150 credit-hour requirement for CPA eligibility. If your degree is in a closely related field like finance or economics, employers can still file a petition as long as the job description connects your education to the role's requirements.
Can I use OPT to start working in accounting before getting H-1B sponsorship?
Yes. F-1 graduates with accounting degrees get 12 months of OPT work authorization after completing their program. If your degree falls under a STEM-designated CIP code (some accounting analytics and information systems programs qualify), you may be eligible for an additional 24-month STEM OPT extension. Most Big Four firms and large employers use the OPT period to evaluate candidates before committing to H-1B sponsorship, making it the most common entry point for international accountants.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored Accountant jobs?
When a U.S. employer sponsors a foreign worker for a work visa, they are legally required to pay at least the "prevailing wage", the average wage paid to workers in the same occupation, in the same geographic area, with similar experience. This is set by the Department of Labor to prevent employers from hiring foreign workers at below-market rates. The prevailing wage varies significantly by role, location, and experience level. For example, a accountant in New York will have a different prevailing wage than the same role in a smaller state. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search Page.
