Target architecture and engineering firms first
Large AEC firms, Gensler, HOK, AECOM, have established H-1B sponsorship pipelines and hire construction administrators regularly. Smaller firms sponsor too, but their HR infrastructure for immigration is far less consistent.
Lead with your licensure and certifications
An ARE license, LEED accreditation, or CDT certification signals specialty occupation credibility to USCIS. Listing these prominently on your resume strengthens both your application and your employer's H-1B petition.
Understand how your degree field affects eligibility
Construction administration is a specialty occupation under H-1B when tied to a degree in architecture, civil engineering, or construction management. A general business degree alone is unlikely to support approval without significant supplemental documentation.
Canadian applicants should evaluate TN status seriously
Canadian citizens qualify for TN visas as architects or engineers without a lottery. If your degree is in architecture or engineering, TN is faster, cheaper, and has no annual cap, worth pursuing before committing to H-1B.
Get a written job description that emphasizes specialty duties
USCIS scrutinizes construction-adjacent roles carefully. Ask your employer to detail the theoretical and practical application of architectural or engineering knowledge in your offer letter, generic job descriptions increase RFE risk.
Document your international project experience clearly
If you supervised construction phases or administered contracts abroad, translate those credentials into U.S. equivalencies on your resume. Foreign licensure and project scale help employers justify sponsorship and support your petition narrative.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is construction administrator a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
It can be, but it requires careful documentation. USCIS approves construction administrator H-1B visa petitions when the role demonstrably requires a bachelor's degree in architecture, civil engineering, or construction management, not just any degree. Roles that blend general project coordination with design oversight tend to qualify; roles framed as field supervision without a clear degree requirement often receive RFEs or denials.
Which visa types do construction administrators typically use for U.S. work authorization?
H-1B is the most common route for non-Canadian, non-Australian applicants. Canadian citizens can qualify under TN status as architects or engineers, bypassing the lottery entirely. Australian citizens may use the E-3 visa. O-1A is an option for applicants with significant recognition, published work, major award credits, or leadership on landmark projects, though it's a higher bar.
Do I need a U.S. architecture license to get sponsored as a construction administrator?
No, a U.S. license isn't required for visa sponsorship, but it significantly strengthens your petition. USCIS looks for evidence that the role requires specialized knowledge, and licensure demonstrates that directly. Many firms will sponsor unlicensed candidates with a relevant degree and strong project experience, particularly if they're working toward licensure through the AXP program.
How do I find construction administrator jobs that offer visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for this, you can filter by visa type and find employers actively open to sponsoring international candidates for construction and design roles. General job boards don't filter by sponsorship willingness, which means a lot of wasted applications. Focusing your search on Migrate Mate saves time and surfaces opportunities from firms that have sponsored before.
Can I qualify for H-1B sponsorship with a construction management degree instead of architecture?
Yes. A bachelor's degree in construction management directly supports H-1B eligibility for construction administrator roles, provided the job description aligns with what that degree covers. USCIS may scrutinize it more than an architecture degree because construction management programs vary, but approval is well-established when the employer's offer letter clearly connects the required duties to the academic curriculum.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored Construction Administrator jobs?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
