Counselor Jobs in USA with Visa Sponsorship
Counselor roles in the U.S. regularly sponsor H-1B visa and O-1 visas for qualified candidates with a master's degree or higher in counseling, psychology, or a related field. Many positions in schools, nonprofits, and healthcare systems are cap-exempt, which removes the lottery entirely. For detailed occupation requirements, see the O*NET profile.

Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding Visa Sponsorship as a Counselor
Target master's-level positions specifically
Most counselor roles that sponsor visas require at least a master's degree in counseling, social work, or psychology. Applying to roles that explicitly list this requirement signals you already meet the baseline USCIS specialty occupation standard.
Prioritize cap-exempt employers
Universities, nonprofit hospitals, and government-affiliated agencies are often cap-exempt H-1B employers. This means they can file your petition at any time of year without entering the lottery, significantly improving your sponsorship timeline and approval odds.
Confirm state licensure requirements upfront
Most states require Licensed Professional Counselor or Licensed Mental Health Counselor credentials to practice. Clarify with each employer whether they'll sponsor you before full licensure, as some roles allow supervised practice while your credentials are still in progress.
Highlight clinical hours and supervised experience
Visa petitions for counselors hinge on demonstrating a direct connection between your degree and the role. Documenting your supervised clinical hours and specific therapeutic modalities strengthens the specialty occupation case your employer's immigration attorney will need to make.
Ask about O-1 eligibility if you have specialized credentials
If you hold advanced certifications, have published research, or are recognized in a specialized area such as trauma, substance abuse, or neuropsychology, an O-1 visa may be viable. It has no cap and no lottery, making it worth exploring with an attorney.
Use Migrate Mate to find verified sponsoring employers
Not every counselor job posting will mention visa sponsorship. Migrate Mate filters for employers with an active sponsorship history, saving you from applying to roles where sponsorship was never a realistic possibility in the first place.

Find Counselor JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Can counselor roles qualify as H-1B specialty occupations?
Yes, counselor roles typically qualify as H-1B specialty occupations when the position requires at least a master's degree in counseling, psychology, or a closely related field. USCIS evaluates whether the degree requirement is tied specifically to the duties of the role. School counselors, clinical mental health counselors, and substance abuse counselors with graduate-level education consistently meet this standard.
Do I need a U.S. license to get sponsored as a counselor?
Not always at the time of sponsorship, but it depends on the employer and state. Some employers sponsor candidates who are working toward licensure under supervision, particularly in states that allow provisional or associate-level credentials. However, full independent practice almost universally requires state licensure, so confirm the employer's policy before accepting an offer.
Are counseling jobs more likely to be cap-exempt for H-1B purposes?
Yes, more so than many other fields. A significant share of counseling positions sit within universities, nonprofit healthcare systems, and public school districts, all of which frequently qualify as cap-exempt H-1B employers. Cap-exempt status means no lottery and no April 1 filing window, which makes the sponsorship process faster and more predictable for both you and the employer.
How can I find counselor jobs that sponsor visas?
Migrate Mate is the most direct way to find counselor roles where employers have a verified history of visa sponsorship. Generic job boards don't filter for sponsorship willingness, so you can spend weeks applying to roles where international hiring was never considered. Migrate Mate removes that guesswork.
Does a three-year bachelor's degree from Australia or the UK count toward H-1B eligibility for counselor roles?
It can, but counselor roles almost always require a master's degree, which makes the three-year bachelor's question less of an issue in practice. If your qualifications include a three-year undergraduate degree followed by a postgraduate counseling qualification, an immigration attorney can evaluate whether the combined credentials satisfy USCIS requirements for the specific role.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored Counselor jobs?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
