Position the role as a specialty occupation
Security director roles can face USCIS scrutiny over whether they qualify as specialty occupations. Emphasize the degree requirement in cybersecurity, information systems, or criminal justice in your job offer letter and supporting documentation.
Target industries with established sponsorship track records
Technology, financial services, healthcare, and defense contractors sponsor security leadership roles most consistently. These industries have documented LCA filings and established HR processes for managing H-1B petitions for senior positions.
Build a portfolio of quantifiable security outcomes
USCIS and employers both respond to concrete results. Document incidents prevented, compliance frameworks implemented, and team sizes managed. Specific metrics strengthen both your visa petition and your negotiating position with sponsoring employers.
Consider the O-1A if you have industry recognition
Directors with published research, major breach response leadership, speaking at security conferences, or industry awards may qualify for O-1A extraordinary ability status, bypassing the H-1B lottery entirely and offering a faster, more certain path.
Understand the LCA prevailing wage implications for senior roles
Security director positions typically fall into Level III or IV prevailing wage categories under DOL standards. Confirm your employer is prepared to meet the certified wage before investing time in the sponsorship process.
Find sponsoring employers on Migrate Mate
Not every company advertising security director roles will sponsor visas. Migrate Mate filters specifically for sponsorship-willing employers, saving you from applications that will stall once immigration requirements are raised in conversations.

Find Director Of Security JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does a Director of Security role qualify for H-1B sponsorship?
Yes, but it depends on how the role is defined. USCIS requires that the position qualifies as a specialty occupation, meaning it normally requires at least a bachelor's degree in a specific field such as cybersecurity, information systems, or criminal justice. Generic management responsibilities without a specific degree requirement can complicate approval. A well-drafted job description that ties the role's duties directly to a technical discipline significantly strengthens the petition.
What degree does a Director of Security typically need for visa sponsorship?
Most employers require a bachelor's degree in cybersecurity, computer science, information systems, criminal justice, or a related field. For H-1B purposes, the key is that the degree must be in a specific specialty relevant to the role, not just any bachelor's degree. Advanced degrees such as an MBA with a security focus or a master's in information assurance can further support the petition, especially for senior leadership positions.
Can a Director of Security qualify for the O-1A visa instead of the H-1B?
Yes, and for strong candidates it's often a better option. The O-1A requires demonstrating extraordinary ability in your field, which for security professionals can include leading incident response for a major organization, contributing to industry standards, speaking at recognized security conferences such as RSA or Black Hat, or receiving peer awards. O-1A petitions bypass the H-1B lottery, have no annual cap, and are adjudicated individually on merit.
How competitive is H-1B approval for Director of Security roles?
Approval rates for senior security roles are generally favorable once past the lottery, but USCIS occasionally issues Requests for Evidence questioning whether the position meets specialty occupation standards. Physical security director roles face more scrutiny than cybersecurity or information security director positions. Petitions supported by a detailed job description, a relevant employer need for a degreed professional, and strong candidate credentials tend to fare well.
Where can I find Director of Security jobs that offer visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is the best starting point. The platform is built specifically for international candidates and filters for employers who are actively open to sponsoring work visas. This is important for Director of Security roles because many companies post these positions without considering immigration requirements upfront, and discovering that late wastes significant time during the hiring process.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored Director Of Security jobs?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
