Target degree-reliant job postings
EHS roles that explicitly require a bachelor's degree in environmental science, industrial hygiene, or engineering are far easier to sponsor under H-1B specialty occupation rules. Postings listing a degree as preferred rather than required can complicate the petition.
Prioritize large industrial employers
Manufacturing, chemical, oil and gas, and construction companies with active EHS departments sponsor more frequently than smaller firms. Companies subject to EPA and OSHA compliance obligations have strong incentive to hire and retain qualified EHS professionals long-term.
Pursue professional certifications early
Credentials like the CSP (Certified Safety Professional) or CIH (Certified Industrial Hygienist) significantly strengthen your H-1B petition by demonstrating specialized expertise beyond a generalist degree, making the specialty occupation argument more defensible to USCIS reviewers.
Understand prevailing wage requirements
Your employer must file a Labor Condition Application certifying your offered compensation meets DOL prevailing wage levels for EHS roles in your work location. Wages vary significantly by geography, so employer location matters as much as the role itself.
Register for H-1B lottery in March
H-1B registrations open each March for an October 1 start date. EHS professionals without an alternative visa pathway need employers registered before the deadline. Missing it means waiting a full year, so confirm your employer's timeline well in advance.
Explore O-1A if your record is strong
EHS professionals with published research, speaking engagements at industry conferences, or recognition in occupational health organizations may qualify for the O-1A extraordinary ability visa, which has no lottery and no annual cap, making it a faster alternative.

Find Environmental Health And Safety JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Do Environmental Health and Safety jobs qualify as H-1B specialty occupations?
Yes, EHS roles typically qualify when the position requires a bachelor's degree or higher in a specific field such as environmental science, industrial hygiene, occupational safety, or engineering. Generalist EHS coordinator roles where any degree is accepted pose a higher risk of USCIS challenge. The stronger the degree-to-job connection in the offer letter and job description, the more defensible the petition.
Which industries are most likely to sponsor EHS professionals?
Manufacturing, oil and gas, chemical production, construction, utilities, and aerospace are the most active sponsors. These industries operate under strict EPA and OSHA compliance frameworks, creating sustained demand for credentialed EHS staff. Federal contractors also sponsor regularly due to regulatory obligations. You can browse sponsoring employers in these sectors on Migrate Mate to identify companies actively hiring internationally.
Does a three-year bachelor's degree qualify for EHS H-1B petitions?
A three-year degree from certain countries, including India and Australia, can qualify if USCIS determines it is equivalent to a U.S. four-year bachelor's degree. This typically requires a credential evaluation from a NACES-approved evaluator and supporting documentation. Some petitions combine a three-year degree with relevant work experience to meet the equivalency threshold. Your attorney should assess your specific credentials before filing.
What certifications improve my chances of H-1B approval as an EHS professional?
The Certified Safety Professional (CSP) issued by BCSP and the Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) from AIHA are the most recognized credentials in the field. Holding either strengthens the specialty occupation argument in your H-1B petition by demonstrating your role demands specialized knowledge beyond a general degree. They also improve competitiveness in the job market and can support O-1A petitions if your profile is strong.
Can EHS professionals on OPT extend their work authorization while waiting for H-1B?
Yes. If you graduated from a STEM-designated program such as environmental engineering or occupational health, you may qualify for a 24-month STEM OPT extension, giving you up to three years of total OPT. This provides additional time to participate in H-1B lotteries if not selected in the first cycle. Non-STEM EHS degrees provide only 12 months of standard OPT with no extension.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored Environmental Health And Safety jobs?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
