How to Get Visa Sponsorship in Equity Trader
Target quantitative trading firms
Citadel, Two Sigma, and Jane Street actively sponsor H-1B visas for algorithmic trading roles. These firms value mathematical modeling skills and often hire internationally trained talent for their trading desks.
Emphasize your degree match
USCIS requires specialty occupation evidence. Finance, mathematics, economics, or engineering degrees align well with trading roles. Document how your coursework applies to market analysis and risk management.
Highlight programming and analytics
Modern trading relies heavily on Python, R, and SQL for data analysis. Firms can justify visa sponsorship more easily when the role requires specialized technical skills beyond basic trading knowledge.
Consider prop trading firms
Proprietary trading companies like DRW and Susquehanna sponsor visas more frequently than traditional investment banks. These firms often have fewer internal candidates and actively recruit international talent.
Build a track record with internships
F-1 students can use OPT for trading internships at sponsoring firms. Strong performance during OPT often leads to full-time H-1B sponsorship, especially at quantitative trading companies.
Apply early in recruiting cycles
Trading firms typically recruit 6-12 months ahead for summer analyst programs. Early applications demonstrate serious interest and give firms time to plan H-1B lottery submissions for international candidates.

Get Access To All JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Do equity trading roles qualify for H-1B visas?
Yes, but the role must require specialized knowledge and a relevant degree. USCIS approves trading positions when employers demonstrate the job requires financial analysis, mathematical modeling, or programming skills that need bachelor's-level education in finance, mathematics, or related fields.
What degree do I need for H-1B sponsorship as an equity trader?
Finance, mathematics, economics, statistics, or engineering degrees typically qualify. The key is showing your coursework relates to trading responsibilities like risk analysis, quantitative modeling, or market research. Some firms also accept computer science degrees for algorithmic trading roles.
Which trading firms sponsor the most H-1B visas?
Citadel, Two Sigma, Jane Street, and DRW are among the top sponsors for trading roles. Investment banks like Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley also sponsor visas, but competition is fiercer. Proprietary trading firms often have higher sponsorship rates than traditional banks.
Can I get visa sponsorship for entry-level trading positions?
Yes, but it's more challenging than experienced roles. Many firms prefer sponsoring analysts with 2-3 years of experience or advanced degrees. Entry-level candidates should emphasize technical skills, relevant coursework, and any trading competition wins or internship experience to stand out.
How long does H-1B processing take for trading jobs?
Standard processing takes 4-6 months, but trading firms often use premium processing for a 15-day decision. The employer typically starts the process in March for an October start date. Some firms file early to account for potential RFEs or administrative delays.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored Equity Trader jobs?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
