Frame the role as a specialty occupation
H-1B approval hinges on proving the job requires a specific degree, not just any bachelor's. Emphasize that your Head of Social role demands expertise in digital marketing strategy, analytics, or brand communications, not general management skills.
Target companies with an established sponsorship track record
Focus your search on employers who have filed H-1B petitions for marketing leadership roles before. Companies with prior sponsorship history move faster and face fewer internal approval hurdles when a new candidate needs a visa.
Lead with measurable impact, not just creative experience
Sponsors want to see that you drive business outcomes. Quantify follower growth, engagement rates, campaign ROI, and revenue attribution in your application materials, this strengthens both your candidacy and the employer's specialty occupation argument.
Clarify your current visa status early in conversations
Letting hiring managers know you're on OPT, STEM OPT, or another transferable status reduces perceived sponsorship risk. Many employers don't realize a status transfer is simpler than a new H-1B petition from scratch.
Understand the LCA wage requirement for your market
Your employer must file a Labor Condition Application certifying your offered wage meets the prevailing rate for the role and location. Research the wage level for Head of Social in your target city so you can negotiate with context.
Apply well before H-1B cap deadlines if you need lottery selection
If you're not already in H-1B status, cap-subject petitions must be filed in April for an October 1 start. Build your job search timeline backward from that window to avoid missing your only annual opportunity.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a Head of Social role qualify for H-1B sponsorship?
Yes, when the position is structured as a specialty occupation requiring a bachelor's degree or higher in a specific field such as marketing, communications, or digital media. The key is that the role must theoretically and practically require that degree, not just prefer it. Employers with dedicated social functions and defined reporting structures tend to have the strongest cases.
What degree do I need for an employer to sponsor my Head of Social visa?
Most successful H-1B visa petitions for this title cite a bachelor's degree in marketing, communications, journalism, business with a marketing concentration, or a related field. A degree in an unrelated discipline makes the specialty occupation argument harder to sustain. If your degree is adjacent, document how your coursework directly applies to social strategy and audience analytics.
Are Head of Social roles typically cap-subject or cap-exempt for H-1B purposes?
Most Head of Social positions at for-profit companies are cap-subject, meaning the employer must enter you in the H-1B lottery. Cap-exempt opportunities, such as roles at nonprofits, universities, or affiliated research organizations, bypass the lottery entirely. If you're exploring social media leadership roles at mission-driven organizations, cap-exempt sponsorship is a realistic path worth prioritizing.
How competitive is H-1B sponsorship for marketing leadership roles like Head of Social?
Approval rates for marketing and communications specialty occupation cases are solid but not automatic, USCIS scrutinizes whether the role truly requires a specific degree rather than general experience. Petitions supported by detailed job duty descriptions, organizational charts showing the role's complexity, and a clear degree-to-duty nexus fare significantly better. Companies that have sponsored similar titles before are your best bet.
Where can I find Head of Social jobs that offer visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for this search, every role on the platform is filtered for visa sponsorship eligibility, so you're not wasting time on listings that won't work for your situation. Browse Head of Social openings on Migrate Mate to find employers actively willing to sponsor H-1B and other work visas for this title.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored Head Of Social jobs?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
