How to Get Visa Sponsorship as a Jira Administrator
Target enterprise software and consulting firms
Large consulting firms and enterprise software companies file the most Jira Administrator LCAs each year. These employers have established immigration programs and dedicated HR teams that handle visa sponsorship routinely, making them far more reliable sponsors than smaller shops.
Frame your role around systems administration, not just ticketing
USCIS evaluates whether a role qualifies as a specialty occupation. Emphasize workflow architecture, API integrations, and Atlassian ecosystem administration in your resume. Roles framed as pure helpdesk or ticket management face higher scrutiny during H-1B adjudication.
Connect your degree field to the role explicitly
Your degree in computer science, information systems, or a related field should map directly to the job description. If your degree is in an adjacent field, document how your coursework and experience support Jira administration at a systems engineering level.
Get Atlassian certifications before applying
The ACP-120 Jira Administrator certification signals technical depth to employers. It also strengthens a specialty occupation argument for visa purposes by demonstrating that the role requires specialized knowledge beyond general IT support or project coordination skills.
Ask about sponsorship timelines during early conversations
H-1B cap season runs January through April for an October start. If you need sponsorship, confirm whether the employer will file in the upcoming cap season. Knowing this early prevents wasted time with companies unwilling to sponsor within your required timeline.
Highlight Jira Data Center and cloud migration experience
Employers migrating from Jira Server to Data Center or cloud need administrators with hands-on migration experience. This specialization increases your leverage with sponsors because it is a documented, high-demand skill that supports a stronger specialty occupation classification.

Can a Jira Administrator role qualify for H-1B sponsorship?
Yes, Jira Administrator roles can qualify as H-1B specialty occupations when the position requires at least a bachelor's degree in computer science, information systems, or a related technical field. Roles framed around systems architecture, API integrations, and enterprise-level administration are more defensible than those described primarily as support or helpdesk functions. USCIS scrutinizes IT administrator roles, so job description language matters significantly.
What degree do I need to get sponsored as a Jira Administrator?
Most employers require a bachelor's degree in computer science, information systems, management information systems, or a closely related field. Some accept degrees in business with a strong technical component if paired with Atlassian certifications and relevant experience. A three-year Australian bachelor's degree is generally accepted as equivalent to a U.S. four-year degree for E-3 visa purposes.
Are there visa options beyond H-1B for Jira Administrators?
Australian citizens can pursue the E-3 visa, which has no lottery and a 10,500 annual cap that has never been filled. Canadian and Mexican nationals may qualify under the TN visa for computer systems analysts, depending on how the role is classified. L-1B is available if you're transferring within a multinational company. Each pathway has different eligibility rules and timelines.
How competitive is it to find a Jira Administrator role with sponsorship?
Sponsoring employers do exist across tech, finance, healthcare IT, and consulting sectors, but not every Jira Administrator opening includes visa support. The most practical approach is filtering specifically for sponsorship-open roles rather than applying broadly. Migrate Mate lists Jira Administrator positions from employers who sponsor work visas, which removes the guesswork of identifying willing sponsors from the start.
Does experience substitute for a degree when applying for sponsored Jira Administrator roles?
For H-1B purposes, three years of specialized work experience can substitute for one year of a bachelor's degree under USCIS equivalency rules. A candidate without a degree would generally need 12 years of relevant experience to satisfy the specialty occupation requirement. However, many employers still list a degree as a hard requirement in job postings, so experience-based equivalency works best when an immigration attorney documents it clearly in the petition.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored Jira Administrator jobs?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
