Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding Visa Sponsorship as a Mechanical Designer
Target industries with high sponsorship rates
Aerospace, automotive, and industrial equipment manufacturers sponsor mechanical designers at higher rates than other sectors. Defense contractors and medical device companies also file regularly, making them strong targets for your job search.
Lead with your CAD and software stack
Employers sponsoring mechanical designers expect proficiency in SolidWorks, AutoCAD, or CATIA. Listing specific software versions and relevant project types upfront signals you can contribute immediately, which reduces hesitation around sponsorship costs and timelines.
Align your degree field to the job description
H-1B approval for mechanical designers depends on a direct connection between your degree and the role. A degree in mechanical engineering, manufacturing engineering, or a related discipline is essential. Mismatched degrees are one of the most common denial reasons.
Highlight certifications and licensed design work
Professional Engineer licensure or GD&T certifications strengthen both your application and the sponsoring employer's H-1B petition. USCIS views specialty occupation status more favorably when the role requires demonstrable, field-specific credentials beyond a general degree.
Engage employers before the H-1B lottery window
H-1B cap registration opens in March each year. Starting your job search by December or January gives employers time to evaluate your application, complete paperwork, and meet the filing deadline without feeling rushed by the sponsorship process.
Use Migrate Mate to find verified sponsoring employers
Not every employer who posts a mechanical designer role is open to sponsorship. Migrate Mate filters for employers with active visa sponsorship history, saving you the time of applying to positions where sponsorship is never a realistic option.

Find Mechanical Designer JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does a mechanical designer role qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
Yes, mechanical designer roles generally qualify as specialty occupations when the position requires at least a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, manufacturing engineering, or a closely related field. USCIS looks at whether the degree requirement is specific to the role. Generic postings that accept any bachelor's degree can create problems, so the job description needs to specify an engineering discipline to support a strong H-1B petition.
What visa types are mechanical designers most commonly sponsored for?
H-1B is the most common visa for mechanical designers at U.S. employers. O-1A is an option for designers with exceptional recognition, such as patents, published research, or awards in their field. Canadians and Mexicans may qualify for TN status under the engineer category, which has no lottery and can be obtained at the border, making it a faster alternative worth exploring if you hold citizenship in either country.
Will a three-year engineering degree from outside the U.S. qualify me for H-1B sponsorship as a mechanical designer?
It depends on how USCIS evaluates the equivalency. A three-year bachelor's degree from Australia, India, or the UK can qualify if a credential evaluation confirms it is equivalent to a U.S. four-year degree in mechanical engineering. Some petitions combine a three-year degree with relevant work experience to establish equivalency. Working with your sponsoring employer's immigration attorney to prepare a strong evaluation is important before filing.
Which types of employers are most likely to sponsor mechanical designers?
Aerospace and defense contractors, automotive manufacturers, medical device companies, and industrial equipment firms have the strongest track records of sponsoring mechanical designers. These industries rely on specialized engineering talent and file H-1B petitions regularly. Smaller firms in general manufacturing or construction are less likely to sponsor, primarily because of the cost and administrative burden involved. Migrate Mate lists employers in these sectors who have active sponsorship history.
How does the H-1B lottery affect mechanical designers specifically?
Mechanical designers face the same 85,000-slot annual cap and random lottery as all other H-1B applicants. In recent years, USCIS has received over 400,000 registrations annually, resulting in selection rates around 25%. If you hold an advanced U.S. degree, you're entered into a separate pool first, which improves your odds slightly. Because the outcome is random, many mechanical designers pursue multiple application cycles or explore cap-exempt employers such as universities or nonprofit research institutions.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored Mechanical Designer jobs?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
