Target children's hospitals and rehabilitation centers
Large healthcare systems like Boston Children's Hospital, Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, and Cincinnati Children's regularly sponsor H-1B visas for specialized pediatric roles including physical therapy positions.
Emphasize specialty pediatric experience
Highlight experience with specific conditions like cerebral palsy, spina bifida, or developmental delays. Specialized pediatric skills make the H-1B specialty occupation requirement easier to demonstrate than general PT work.
Consider school district positions
Public school systems hire pediatric PTs for special education services and often sponsor visas. These roles focus on helping children access education rather than traditional rehabilitation therapy.
Check state licensing requirements early
Each state has different PT licensing requirements and timelines. Some states allow temporary permits while permanent licenses process, but others require full licensure before starting work under visa sponsorship.
Understand the TN visa option
Canadian and Mexican physical therapists can use TN status instead of H-1B. The role must be in a clinical setting and you need a relevant degree plus state licensure.
Document pediatric specialty credentials
Board certification in pediatric physical therapy or specialized training strengthens your H-1B case. These credentials help establish why the position requires someone with your specific pediatric expertise and educational background.
Frequently Asked Questions
What degree do I need for H-1B sponsorship as a pediatric physical therapist?
You need a Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) degree or equivalent. Some employers accept a Master's in Physical Therapy if you graduated before the profession transitioned to doctoral-level training. Your degree must be from an accredited program, and foreign degrees need credential evaluation through organizations like FCCPT.
Do pediatric physical therapists qualify for TN visa status?
Yes, if you're Canadian or Mexican. Physical therapist is a listed TN visa profession, and pediatric specialty work qualifies. You need a relevant degree, state licensure, and the position must involve direct patient care rather than administrative or research roles primarily.
How competitive is H-1B sponsorship for pediatric physical therapists?
Competition varies by employer type. Children's hospitals and large healthcare systems sponsor regularly and understand the process. Smaller private practices rarely sponsor due to cost and complexity. School districts increasingly sponsor for special education PT roles as demand grows.
Can I work while my state PT license is pending?
This depends entirely on state law. States like Texas and Florida offer temporary permits that allow immediate work. Others like California require full licensure before starting. Check your target state's requirements early since processing can take 2-6 months for international graduates.
What happens if my H-1B petition is denied?
If currently in the U.S. on valid status like F-1 OPT, you can remain until that status expires. Consider alternative visas like O-1 visa if you have exceptional ability credentials, or look for employers in TN-eligible positions if Canadian/Mexican. Some switch to different healthcare roles with better sponsorship odds.
How to find Pediatric Physical Therapist jobs with visa sponsorship?
To find Pediatric Physical Therapist jobs with visa sponsorship, use Migrate Mate, which specializes in connecting international healthcare professionals with sponsoring employers. Focus your search on children's hospitals, pediatric rehabilitation centers, school districts, and large healthcare systems that commonly sponsor H-1B visa and EB-2 visas for licensed physical therapists. These employers typically have established sponsorship programs for qualified pediatric specialists.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored Pediatric Physical Therapist jobs?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
