Emphasize board certification and subspecialty training
Board certification in Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation significantly strengthens visa applications. Subspecialty fellowships in areas like spinal cord injury or sports medicine demonstrate extraordinary ability for O-1 petitions.
Highlight multidisciplinary collaboration experience
Physiatry's collaborative nature with orthopedics, neurology, and therapy teams demonstrates unique expertise. Document leadership roles in multidisciplinary care teams to strengthen your specialty occupation case for H-1B applications.
Target academic medical centers and rehabilitation hospitals
Academic institutions and specialized rehabilitation facilities regularly sponsor physicians. These employers understand the visa process and often have dedicated immigration support for recruiting international medical talent.
Leverage medical licensing board recognition
State medical board licensing demonstrates professional recognition in the field. ECFMG certification and successful residency completion provide additional evidence of specialty expertise for visa adjudication purposes.

Find Physiatrist JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Do physiatrists qualify for H-1B visa sponsorship?
Yes, physiatrists easily qualify for H-1B sponsorship as the role requires specialized medical knowledge and a Doctor of Medicine degree. The position clearly meets specialty occupation requirements since it demands specific medical training in physical medicine and rehabilitation that only licensed physicians possess.
How to find Physiatrist jobs with visa sponsorship?
Start your search on Migrate Mate, which specializes in visa-sponsored medical positions. Focus on rehabilitation hospitals, healthcare systems, and medical centers that commonly sponsor H-1B visas for Physiatrists. Target larger hospital networks and academic medical centers, as they typically have established visa sponsorship programs for specialized physicians in physical medicine and rehabilitation.
What degree requirements apply for physiatrist visa sponsorship?
Physiatrists need a Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) degree plus completion of an accredited Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation residency program. Foreign medical graduates must have ECFMG certification and equivalent training recognized by U.S. medical boards for visa approval.
Can physiatrists get EB-2 green cards through their specialty?
Yes, physiatrists qualify for EB-2 green cards as advanced degree professionals. Those with exceptional research contributions, publications, or leadership in rehabilitation medicine may qualify for EB-2 National Interest Waiver, bypassing the lengthy PERM labor certification process entirely.
How do J-1 residency waivers affect physiatrist sponsorship?
International residents on J-1 visas subject to the two-year home residency requirement must obtain a waiver before H-1B sponsorship. Common waiver options include practicing in underserved areas, state health department sponsorship, or demonstrating exceptional hardship circumstances to qualifying family members.
Do physiatrists have better H-1B approval rates than other occupations?
Physiatrists typically have high H-1B approval rates due to clear specialty occupation requirements and physician shortage documentation. Medical degrees directly correlate to job duties, and the specialized nature of physical medicine rehabilitation makes denial unlikely for properly documented petitions.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored Physiatrist jobs?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
