Target companies with active H-1B filing histories
Employers who have sponsored H-1B visas before understand the process and are far less likely to back out late. Prioritize mid-to-large technology companies with established immigration programs and in-house or retained legal counsel.
Clarify the sponsorship timeline early
Ask during the offer stage whether the company sponsors H-1B cap-subject petitions or only cap-exempt transfers. Knowing this upfront prevents wasted time if you need a new H-1B rather than a simple transfer.
Align your degree field to the role description
USCIS expects a direct connection between your degree field and the platform developer role. Computer science, software engineering, and information systems degrees are the strongest fit. Unrelated degrees require a carefully documented equivalency argument.
Negotiate premium processing into your offer
Premium processing reduces the H-1B approval wait to 15 business days. Some employers include it as standard for technical hires. If yours does not, it is reasonable to request it, especially if you are on OPT with limited time remaining.
Document platform-specific technical skills precisely
USCIS evaluates whether the role genuinely requires a specialized degree. A job description that lists specific platforms, cloud environments, or integration frameworks makes the specialty occupation argument significantly stronger than a generic developer description.
Understand your current status expiration before accepting
If you are on OPT or a grace period, confirm the employer can file an H-1B cap-subject petition before your authorized stay ends. Misaligned timelines are one of the most common reasons offers fall through for international candidates.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Platform Developer role qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
Yes, platform developer roles consistently qualify as specialty occupations because they require theoretical and practical application of computer science or a related technical discipline. USCIS expects a bachelor's degree or higher in a specific technical field as a minimum entry requirement. Generic job descriptions that accept any degree regardless of field can complicate this, so the offer letter and job duties should clearly reflect the technical requirements.
What degree do I need for a Platform Developer to get H-1B sponsorship?
A bachelor's degree in computer science, software engineering, information systems, or a closely related field is the standard requirement. Degrees in unrelated fields can still qualify if you demonstrate a logical connection through coursework, certifications, or a combination of education and experience. USCIS also accepts three years of relevant work experience as a substitute for one year of formal education when building an equivalency argument.
How do I find Platform Developer jobs that offer H-1B sponsorship?
Migrate Mate filters job listings specifically by visa sponsorship availability, so you can browse platform developer roles from employers who have explicitly confirmed they sponsor H-1B visa and other work visas. This removes the guesswork of cold-applying to companies that may not sponsor, which is one of the biggest time wasters for international candidates in technical job searches.
Can I transfer my H-1B to a new employer if I switch Platform Developer jobs?
Yes. H-1B portability allows you to start working for a new employer as soon as the transfer petition is filed, without waiting for approval, provided you have been in valid H-1B status and the new petition is non-frivolous. Your new employer files a new I-129 petition. The role must still qualify as a specialty occupation, which is rarely an issue for platform developer positions at established technology companies.
Does it matter if a company is cap-subject or cap-exempt for Platform Developer sponsorship?
It matters significantly depending on your situation. If you already hold an approved H-1B, you only need a transfer and cap status is irrelevant. If you need a new H-1B, cap-subject employers must enter you in the April lottery, while cap-exempt employers such as universities, nonprofits, and certain research institutions can file year-round. For platform developer roles specifically, most hiring companies are cap-subject, so lottery timing is a real constraint to plan around.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored Platform Developer jobs?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
