Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding Visa Sponsorship as a Proposal Writer
Target federal contractors and consulting firms first
Defense contractors, management consulting firms, and government services companies hire proposal writers regularly and have established visa sponsorship processes. These employers file LCAs frequently, making them far more likely to sponsor than small businesses.
Frame your degree as field-specific, not general
USCIS approves H-1B petitions for proposal writers when the degree requirement is specific. A communications, English, or technical writing degree strengthens your case significantly more than a general business degree with no writing focus.
Get a job description that specifies degree requirements
Your employer's job posting must state that a bachelor's degree in a specific field is required, not preferred. A posting that says 'degree preferred' weakens the specialty occupation argument and gives USCIS grounds to issue a Request for Evidence.
Highlight industry-specific writing experience
Proposal writers with experience in highly regulated industries, such as healthcare IT, aerospace, or cybersecurity, are easier to sponsor. The technical complexity of those sectors strengthens the specialty occupation argument during the petition review.
Understand the H-1B timeline before you accept an offer
If you need cap-subject H-1B sponsorship, registration opens in March for an October 1 start. Align your job search and offer timing accordingly so your employer can file the petition within the registration window.
Ask about cap-exempt employers during your search
Universities, nonprofit research institutions, and certain government-affiliated organizations are exempt from the H-1B lottery. A proposal writer role at a cap-exempt employer means faster sponsorship with no lottery risk and year-round filing availability.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a proposal writer get H-1B visa sponsorship?
Yes, but the petition depends on how the role is defined. USCIS evaluates whether proposal writing qualifies as a specialty occupation, which requires a specific bachelor's degree as a minimum entry requirement. Roles tied to technical, scientific, or government contract writing in regulated industries have stronger approval records than general copywriting positions.
What degree do I need for a sponsored proposal writer job?
A bachelor's degree in communications, English, technical writing, journalism, or business with a writing concentration is most commonly accepted. The degree must be relevant to the specific type of proposals you'll write. If your degree is in an unrelated field, a credential evaluation showing equivalency through coursework and experience may be required.
Which employers are most likely to sponsor proposal writers?
Federal contractors are the most consistent sponsors for proposal writers because winning government contracts depends directly on proposal quality. Large firms in defense, IT services, healthcare, and management consulting, such as those filing LCAs regularly with the Department of Labor, have the legal infrastructure to support sponsorship. Browse current openings on Migrate Mate to find employers with active sponsorship histories.
Does a proposal writer role qualify as a specialty occupation?
It can, but it's not automatic. USCIS looks at whether the role normally requires a specific bachelor's degree, not just any degree. Proposal writers embedded in technical or scientific teams, or those writing for government contracts in specialized domains like cybersecurity or biomedical research, have a stronger specialty occupation argument than generalist grant or sales proposal writers.
Is the E-3 visa an option for Australian proposal writers?
Yes. Australian citizens can use the E-3 visa for proposal writer roles that qualify as specialty occupations, with no lottery and a faster path than the H-1B visa. The specialty occupation standard is the same: your employer's job description must require a bachelor's degree in a specific field. E-3 visa petitions are filed directly at a U.S. consulate in Australia, so you can start without waiting for a cap year.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored Proposal Writer jobs?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
