How to Get Visa Sponsorship as a Senior Sharepoint Developer
Target enterprise and government contractors first
Large enterprises and federal contractors, particularly in defense, healthcare, and finance, sponsor SharePoint developers at higher rates than mid-sized firms. These employers have established immigration counsel and recurring H-1B budgets, making sponsorship conversations far more straightforward.
Lead with Microsoft 365 and SharePoint Online expertise
Employers sponsoring H-1B visas must justify the specialty occupation requirement. Demonstrating deep expertise in SharePoint Online, Power Platform, and Microsoft 365 integration strengthens your employer's LCA filing and makes your role harder to challenge as a generalist position.
Confirm your degree field aligns with the role
USCIS requires a direct relationship between your degree field and the SharePoint Developer role. Degrees in computer science, information systems, or software engineering map cleanly. A business degree alone may require additional documentation or a credential evaluation to satisfy the specialty occupation standard.
Ask about cap-exempt employers during your search
Universities, non-profits affiliated with higher education, and certain research institutions are exempt from the H-1B lottery. SharePoint Developer roles exist at these organizations, and cap-exempt sponsorship means you can start without waiting for an annual lottery selection.
Get your international credentials evaluated early
If your degree is from outside the United States, a credential evaluation from a NACES-approved agency is essential before your employer files. Evaluations confirming U.S. bachelor's equivalency in a relevant field prevent delays and reduce the risk of a USCIS Request for Evidence.
Understand the LCA prevailing wage before accepting an offer
Your employer must file a Labor Condition Application certifying your offered wage meets the prevailing wage for your location and role. Roles classified under SOC code 15-1252 (Software Developers) typically carry higher prevailing wages than generic IT titles, which affects what employers are willing to offer.

Get Access To All JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Is Senior SharePoint Developer considered a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
Yes, Senior SharePoint Developer consistently qualifies as a specialty occupation under H-1B standards. USCIS looks for a direct relationship between the role and a specific academic field. Employers typically classify these positions under SOC code 15-1252 (Software Developers) or 15-1299 (Software and Web Developers), both of which have strong approval histories for developer roles requiring a bachelor's degree in computer science, information systems, or a closely related field.
Which employers are most likely to sponsor a Senior SharePoint Developer?
Federal government contractors, large financial institutions, and healthcare systems are the most consistent H-1B sponsors for SharePoint Developer roles. IT consulting firms that staff Microsoft ecosystem talent, particularly those with existing Master Service Agreements with enterprise clients, also file regularly. You can browse currently open, sponsorship-confirmed Senior SharePoint Developer positions on Migrate Mate, filtered by visa type and employer.
Do I need a four-year degree to get H-1B sponsorship as a SharePoint Developer?
A U.S. bachelor's degree or its foreign equivalent in a relevant field is the standard requirement. However, USCIS also accepts a combination of education and progressive work experience: three years of specialized experience can substitute for one year of formal education. If your degree is in a non-technical field, your employer will likely need a detailed position description and possibly an expert opinion letter to support the specialty occupation classification.
Can a Senior SharePoint Developer on OPT transfer to H-1B sponsorship?
Yes. If you're currently working on F-1 OPT, your employer can file an H-1B petition on your behalf during the annual cap registration period in March. STEM OPT extends your work authorization for up to 24 months if your degree qualifies, giving you additional lottery chances. If selected, your H-1B status typically begins October 1. Filing early and maintaining continuous employment is critical to avoiding gaps in work authorization.
Are SharePoint Developer H-1B petitions frequently hit with Requests for Evidence?
RFE rates for software developer roles have increased in recent years, particularly when the job description is broad or the employer uses a staffing or consulting model. The most common RFE issues involve specialty occupation justification and employer-employee relationship documentation for third-party placement scenarios. Employers who keep job descriptions tightly scoped to SharePoint-specific duties and provide detailed evidence of day-to-day oversight typically see stronger approval outcomes.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored Senior Sharepoint Developer jobs?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
