Target mid-size and enterprise employers first
Large enterprises and mid-size companies running ServiceNow instances are the most active H-1B sponsors for this role. They have established legal teams, prior LCA filings, and predictable sponsorship pipelines compared to smaller consulting shops.
Lead with your ServiceNow certifications
Certified System Administrator and Certified Application Developer credentials signal role-specific expertise that strengthens a specialty occupation argument. Employers use these certifications to justify H-1B petitions when a degree field doesn't directly align with the role.
Understand what 'specialty occupation' means for this title
USCIS requires a bachelor's degree in a specific field as a minimum for entry into the role. Computer Science, Information Systems, and Software Engineering are the most defensible degree fields. Generalist degrees require stronger documentation from the employer.
Ask about LCA status before investing in interviews
A certified Labor Condition Application must exist before an H-1B petition can be filed. Confirming an employer has filed LCAs for this job title previously tells you they have an active sponsorship process, not just good intentions.
Factor in implementation partner firms
ServiceNow implementation partners, such as consulting firms that deploy and customize the platform for clients, are frequent H-1B sponsors for this role. They hire at volume and often sponsor developers who then work at client sites under a valid LCA.
Time your applications around the H-1B registration window
H-1B registration opens in March each year for an October 1 start date. If you're on OPT, aligning your job search to have an offer by February gives employers enough lead time to register and file your petition.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do ServiceNow Developer roles qualify as specialty occupations for H-1B purposes?
Yes, ServiceNow Developer is well-established as a specialty occupation. USCIS looks for a direct relationship between the role and a specific degree field. Computer Science, Information Systems, and Software Engineering are the most commonly cited fields in approved petitions. Employers who have filed LCAs for this title before will have documentation supporting the specialty occupation argument, which reduces petition risk.
What visa types cover ServiceNow Developer positions in the United States?
H-1B visa is the most common path for non-Australian nationals. Australian citizens can use the E-3 visa, which has no lottery, a separate annual cap of 10,500 slots that has never been fully used, and allows two-year renewable periods. Canadian and Mexican nationals may qualify under the TN visa category if the role maps to a covered profession. L-1B is available for intracompany transfers with specialized knowledge of the platform.
Does my degree field matter if I have ServiceNow certifications?
Degree field matters for the specialty occupation determination, but certifications help when the degree isn't a perfect match. A degree in a non-technical field paired with ServiceNow Certified System Administrator or Certified Application Developer credentials gives the employer more supporting evidence. Some employers will also document the role's requirements to show a technical degree is the industry norm, which can bridge a degree field gap.
How selective are employers about sponsoring ServiceNow Developers compared to general software engineers?
ServiceNow is a specialized platform, and qualified developers are genuinely harder to find than generalist software engineers. That scarcity works in candidates' favor during sponsorship conversations. Employers who have already invested in ServiceNow infrastructure are more motivated to sponsor a developer with platform expertise than to settle for a local candidate who needs months of training. Browse current openings on Migrate Mate to see which employers are actively filing LCAs for this role.
Can I switch ServiceNow Developer employers while on an H-1B?
Yes. Under H-1B portability, you can start working for a new employer as soon as they file an H-1B transfer petition, without waiting for approval, provided your current H-1B was approved and you haven't had a gap in authorized status. The new employer files a new I-129 petition and a fresh LCA certified for their worksite. You don't re-enter the lottery, and your remaining H-1B time carries over.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored Servicenow Developer jobs?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
