How to Get Visa Sponsorship as a Test Automation Engineer
Target companies with established QA teams
Large technology and enterprise software companies maintain dedicated automation engineering teams and have immigration infrastructure in place. They sponsor H-1B petitions routinely, which reduces approval risk and speeds up the internal approval process considerably.
Emphasize your specific automation stack
Employers sponsoring visas want certainty you can contribute immediately. Listing Selenium, Cypress, Playwright, or Appium alongside CI/CD experience signals specialized expertise that justifies the sponsorship investment and strengthens the specialty occupation classification for your petition.
Clarify your degree field in applications
H-1B approval for this role requires a degree in computer science, software engineering, or a closely related field. If your degree has an unconventional title, note the relevant coursework upfront so hiring managers can assess sponsorship eligibility before escalating to legal.
Apply early relative to the H-1B lottery cycle
H-1B registrations open in March for an October start date. Securing an offer by February gives your employer enough lead time to register, prepare the petition, and meet USCIS deadlines without rushing the documentation process or requiring premium processing.
Ask about cap-exempt pathways if you have OPT
If you're currently on F-1 OPT or STEM OPT, some employers can file H-1B petitions with cap-exempt institutions or transition you through other nonimmigrant categories. Raising this early signals immigration awareness and gives both sides more options to explore.
Frame sponsorship as a retention benefit in negotiations
Employers who invest in visa sponsorship typically expect multi-year retention. Framing your interest in long-term contribution and career growth within the company can shift sponsorship from a perceived cost to a structured retention and workforce planning advantage for the employer.

Does Test Automation Engineer qualify for H-1B visa sponsorship?
Yes, Test Automation Engineer consistently qualifies as an H-1B specialty occupation because the role requires theoretical and practical application of computer science or software engineering. USCIS has approved petitions for this title at high rates when the job description specifies technical requirements and the applicant holds a relevant bachelor's degree or higher. Roles emphasizing manual testing with no automation component can face additional scrutiny.
What degree do I need for an employer to sponsor my Test Automation Engineer visa?
A bachelor's degree or higher in computer science, software engineering, information technology, or a closely related field satisfies the H-1B specialty occupation requirement for this role. Degrees in unrelated fields are harder to support even with years of experience, though a credential evaluation may help if your degree title is unconventional. Some employers also accept equivalent combinations of a two-year degree plus six years of directly relevant experience.
Which industries hire Test Automation Engineers with visa sponsorship most often?
Fintech, enterprise software, healthcare technology, and cloud infrastructure companies are the most consistent sponsors for this role. These industries run large QA organizations with dedicated automation functions and process H-1B petitions regularly through established legal teams. Defense contractors and government IT firms are generally less viable because many require security clearances that are difficult or impossible to obtain on a nonimmigrant visa.
How can I find Test Automation Engineer jobs that offer visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate filters job listings specifically for roles where employers have indicated willingness to sponsor work visas, saving you from applying to positions that will disqualify you at the offer stage. Searching on Migrate Mate lets you focus your effort on companies already familiar with the sponsorship process, which improves your chances of moving efficiently from application to offer to petition filing.
Can I switch employers as a Test Automation Engineer on an H-1B?
Yes. H-1B portability allows you to start working for a new employer as soon as they file a transfer petition on your behalf, without waiting for USCIS approval, provided you've been in valid H-1B status and the petition is non-frivolous. The new employer files a fresh I-129 petition. Your role and degree must still satisfy specialty occupation requirements at the new company, and the prevailing wage must meet Department of Labor standards for that location.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored Test Automation Engineer jobs?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
