ABOUT THE ROLE:
The Performance Automation team is dedicated to developing optimization tools that enhance our clients' advertising campaign outcomes, ensuring they meet or surpass their Key Performance Indicators (KPIs).
You will be working on enhancing machine learning model development; creating the tools and frameworks that allow for quicker iteration and refinement of models by data scientists, from creating ETLs that process petabytes of data to experimenting with novel model training architectures. You will be responsible for integrating models in our bidding infrastructure, where low latency and high performance are of paramount importance; your code will be running millions of times per second on datacenters across the entire globe.
You will be also working on developing and improving debugging and analytical tools for monitoring and adjusting the bidding system in real-time. Utilize these tools to quickly identify and address any issues, improving campaign efficiency and ensuring effective use of budgets and resources.
Our Software Engineer team members will participate actively in all aspects of designing, building, and delivering products for our clients.
We have dozens of mission-focused teams working across a wide spectrum of technological challenges. You will have the opportunity, depending on your interests and aptitude, to work on large-scale distributed systems coordinating thousands of servers in cloud and physical data centers around the world, petabyte-scale data challenges, machine learning, advanced visualizations, and interactive user interfaces – to name a few.
Trade Desk Software Engineers contribute to more than our product – they build up our team. Through a combination of mentoring, technical leadership, and/or direct management of small teams, they make others better and raise the bar for those around them.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Key Attributes
- You have a sustained track record of making significant, self-directed, and end-to-end contributions to large and impactful software projects. You think beyond just the task at hand to deeply understand the 'why' behind what you are doing.
- You understand engineering fundamentals. At our scale, many off-the-shelf techniques and existing technologies (open source and enterprise) simply don't work. You are able to work from first principles to evaluate solutions and adapt them to a unique environment.
- You are a broadly skilled engineer, accustomed to developing web services. You have experience building always-on systems, working across a variety of technologies and service layers.
- You have a product-focused mindset. You have the passion and ability to contribute to the process of discovering what will delight our clients and push forward one of the world's largest and most influential industries toward a vision of openness, transparency, and evidence-based decision-making.
- You work with confidence and without ego. Our engineers have deep knowledge and exercise a high degree of leadership in their daily work. You have strongly-held, defensible ideas, and advocate for what you believe is right. You are also adept at identifying and evaluating trade-offs, willing to be proven wrong, and quick to walk through fire to support your fellow teammates.
- You value, seek out, and foster diversity. We are a global team from many diverse backgrounds, with different experiences and perspectives. To complement this team, you will welcome ideas that are different from your own and be skilled at finding and building from common ground.
- You are a creative thinker, not bound by "the way things have always been done". What you know is less important than how well you learn and innovate. We don't need engineers who know all the answers; we need engineers who can invent the answers no one has thought of yet, to the questions yet to be asked.
LOCATION
The position will be located in Boulder, CO and we do require Engineers to work under a hybrid office work attendance.

Target engineering and data science roles first
The Trade Desk's H-1B filings are concentrated in software engineering, data science, and platform analytics. These roles have the clearest specialty occupation argument, which strengthens your petition and reduces the risk of an RFE from USCIS.
Confirm your degree field matches the job description
H-1B specialty occupation requires a direct connection between your degree field and the role. A computer science or statistics degree for a data engineering position is straightforward. A general business degree for a technical role will face far more scrutiny at adjudication.
Ask about cap-exempt filing options if you have prior H-1B history
If you've previously been counted against the H-1B cap, The Trade Desk can file for you outside the lottery window. This is a significant advantage if your current status is running out and you missed the April registration cycle.
Australian citizens should flag the E-3 option early
The E-3 requires no lottery and can be filed at any time of year. If you're Australian and interviewing at The Trade Desk, raise the E-3 during offer negotiation. Most employers are receptive once they understand it's simpler and faster than H-1B.
Prepare for technical interviews that test domain depth
The Trade Desk hires for roles where deep expertise matters, specifically programmatic advertising infrastructure, machine learning pipelines, and real-time bidding systems. Interviewers expect applied knowledge, not surface-level familiarity with the technology stack.
Use Migrate Mate to identify which roles are actively sponsoring
Not every open role at The Trade Desk is available for visa sponsorship at the same time. Migrate Mate filters job listings specifically for sponsorship-eligible positions, so you're not spending time on roles that won't move forward.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does The Trade Desk sponsor H-1B visas?
Yes, The Trade Desk has a documented history of H-1B sponsorship, primarily for software engineering, data science, and platform analytics roles. LCA filings with the Department of Labor confirm ongoing sponsorship activity. Not every role qualifies, so it's worth confirming sponsorship availability directly during the interview process.
What degree do I need to qualify for H-1B sponsorship at The Trade Desk?
You need a bachelor's degree or higher in a field directly related to the role. For engineering positions, computer science, electrical engineering, or a closely related technical field is expected. For data science or analytics roles, statistics, mathematics, or applied computing all work. A general degree in an unrelated field creates specialty occupation risk and may trigger an RFE.
Can Australian citizens apply for an E-3 visa to work at The Trade Desk?
Yes, and it's often the better path. The E-3 visa requires no lottery, has a 10,500-slot annual allocation that has never been exhausted, and can be applied for at any time through a U.S. consulate in Australia. The Trade Desk would still need to file a Labor Condition Application, but the overall process is significantly faster than H-1B. Raise it early in offer discussions.
What happens if I don't get selected in the H-1B lottery after receiving an offer from The Trade Desk?
If you're not selected, your petition is returned and you cannot work in H-1B status that fiscal year. Options depend on your current status: OPT or STEM OPT holders can continue working and try again in the next lottery cycle. If you're already in H-1B status from a prior employer, The Trade Desk can transfer your visa without re-entering the lottery. Australians may also pivot to the E-3.
How do I find The Trade Desk job listings that are open to visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate lists roles at The Trade Desk and other sponsoring employers filtered specifically for visa-eligible candidates. This removes the guesswork of identifying which postings will actually support sponsorship, which isn't always clear from a standard job description. Searching Migrate Mate by role type or visa category is the most direct way to find relevant openings.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored The Trade Desk jobs?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
