How to Get Visa Sponsorship in User Experience UX
Frame your degree as a specialty occupation match
USCIS requires UX roles to qualify as specialty occupations, meaning a specific bachelor's degree must be required for the job. Degrees in Human-Computer Interaction, Interaction Design, or Cognitive Science align most cleanly with UX job descriptions.
Target employers with a proven H-1B filing history
Not every company that posts UX roles will sponsor visas. Focus your search on employers who have filed H-1B petitions for UX or design roles before. DOL disclosure data shows which companies have done this consistently in recent years.
Understand that your portfolio carries weight in the petition
For UX roles, USCIS officers sometimes scrutinize whether the job truly requires a degree. A strong portfolio demonstrating research, wireframing, and systems-level thinking reinforces that your work is specialized, not generalist, supporting the specialty occupation argument.
Ask employers about LCA filing before your start date
Your employer must file a Labor Condition Application with the Department of Labor before submitting your H-1B petition. Confirming this step is underway early avoids delays, especially if you're transitioning from OPT or another visa status with a hard deadline.
Consider O-1A if your work has received industry recognition
UX professionals with notable conference presentations, published research, awards, or leadership at recognized organizations may qualify for the O-1A extraordinary ability visa. It bypasses the H-1B lottery entirely and can be filed at any time of year.
Use cap-exempt employers to avoid lottery risk
Universities, nonprofit research institutions, and certain government entities are exempt from the H-1B annual cap. UX roles at university design labs or nonprofit organizations can be sponsored outside the lottery, offering a more predictable path to work authorization.

Get Access To All JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Do UX jobs qualify for H-1B sponsorship?
Yes, UX roles can qualify for H-1B sponsorship when the position requires a specific bachelor's degree in a field like Human-Computer Interaction, Interaction Design, or a related discipline. The key is demonstrating that the job is a specialty occupation. Roles framed around generalist design or marketing functions face more scrutiny during USCIS adjudication, so job title and description wording matters considerably.
What degree do I need for a sponsored UX role?
Most sponsoring employers require a bachelor's degree in Human-Computer Interaction, Interaction Design, Cognitive Science, Computer Science, or Psychology with a UX concentration. USCIS looks for a direct connection between your degree field and the job duties. If your degree is in an adjacent field, documented coursework in UX research methods or design systems can help support the specialty occupation argument.
How competitive is H-1B sponsorship for UX designers compared to software engineers?
UX roles face more petition scrutiny than software engineering roles because specialty occupation status is less automatically established. USCIS may issue a Request for Evidence asking the employer to prove a degree in a specific field is required. Large tech employers with experienced immigration counsel handle this routinely, which is why targeting companies with a documented history of sponsoring design roles is a practical advantage.
Can I get sponsored for a UX role if I'm currently on OPT?
Yes. Many UX professionals transition from F-1 OPT to H-1B status. If you have a STEM-designated degree such as HCI or Computer Science, you may be eligible for a 24-month STEM OPT extension, which gives you up to three H-1B lottery cycles to secure sponsorship. Starting your job search early and browsing sponsored UX roles on Migrate Mate improves your chances of finding an employer ready to file before your OPT expires.
Are there visa options for UX roles that bypass the H-1B lottery?
Yes. The O-1A visa is available to UX professionals who can demonstrate extraordinary ability through awards, published research, speaking engagements, or leadership in recognized organizations. Cap-exempt H-1B sponsorship is also available through universities and qualifying nonprofits. Australian citizens can explore the E-3 visa, and Canadian and Mexican nationals may qualify under TN status if the role fits an eligible USMCA occupation category.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored User Experience UX jobs?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
