INTRODUCTION
The University of Tennessee at Martin is accepting applications for an Assistant Jumping Seat Equestrian Team Coach. The position supports all aspects of the NCAA Division I equestrian program, with primary responsibility for the Jump Seat discipline, including the Flat and Fences squads. The Assistant Coach will contribute to coaching and student-athlete development, recruiting, oversight of student workers and team barn managers. Additionally, the team coach will be responsible for horse care and animal welfare, facility and barn operations, competition preparation, compliance, external outreach, and program development. The successful candidate will help foster a positive, accountable, and competitive team culture while upholding high standards of professionalism, horsemanship, and animal welfare.
The University of Tennessee at Martin is a primary campus of the University of Tennessee System. The campus is located in Northwest Tennessee, approximately 120 miles north of Memphis and 150 miles west of Nashville and serves approximately 8,000 undergraduate and graduate students. Equestrian facilities include a 110-foot by 220-foot enclosed heated arena used for practices and competitions, outdoor riding arenas, barn facilities, and pasture space dedicated to the equestrian program.
Responsibilities
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- planning and conducting practices
- providing individual and group instruction
- preparing student-athletes for competition
- analyzing performance and assisting with meet strategy
- supporting student-athletes' academic, athletic, and personal development
- identifying, evaluating, and recruiting prospective student-athletes.
Other duties and responsibilities include assisting with camps, clinics, recruiting visits, correspondence, and required documentation; overseeing the daily care, conditioning, and welfare of program horses; assisting with barn, arena, tack room, feed, supply, and facility operations; coordinating equine care needs with veterinarians, farriers, and other service providers; supervising and mentoring student workers and team barn managers; assisting with competition logistics, administrative duties, and NCAA, NCEA, conference, and university compliance; supporting fundraising, alumni and donor engagement, educational programming, community outreach, and equine-industry partnerships; and completing other duties assigned by the Head Coach.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor's degree.
- Competitive equestrian experience at the collegiate, national, junior, amateur, or professional level, preferably within Jump Seat disciplines including Flat and Fences.
- Demonstrated knowledge of coaching principles, horse care, stable management, and equestrian operations.
- Strong communication, organizational, interpersonal, problem-solving, and relationship-building skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively and manage multiple responsibilities in a fast-paced athletics environment.
- Ability to work evenings and weekends and to travel as required.
- Valid driver's license.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience participating in or assisting with practices, lessons, camps, clinics, recruiting activities, or student-athlete development.
- Knowledge of NCAA, NCEA, conference, and collegiate athletics operations.
- Experience with equine facility operations, barn management, or supervision of student workers.
- Experience with fundraising, community outreach, or educational programming.
