Banker Jobs in New York: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a banker in New York?
Most banker roles in New York require a bachelor's degree in finance, economics, or accounting, followed by registration with FINRA for any position involving securities or investment products. Client-facing roles at New York banks typically require passing the Series 6 or Series 7 exam before you can advise clients. For commercial and retail banking positions that don't involve securities, employers generally prioritize relevant coursework, internships, and knowledge of New York State banking regulations overseen by the Department of Financial Services.
How much do bankers make in New York?
Bankers in New York earn a median of about $44,400 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $37,950 for the lowest 10% to over $55,420 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire bankers in New York?
Employers hiring bankers in New York right now include Citi, KeyBank, and Bank of America, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. New York's density of global financial institutions, regional community banks, and credit unions means hiring activity is consistent year-round across a wide range of banking specialties.
Which New York cities have the most banker jobs?
New York, Skaneateles, and New York City have the most banker openings in New York. New York City dominates the distribution as the headquarters of major global and national banks, while Buffalo and Albany generate steady demand through regional banks, credit unions, and state government-affiliated financial institutions serving upstate communities.
Are there remote banker jobs in New York?
Yes, but they're less common than in purely analytical fields, since many banker roles involve in-person client relationships and branch operations. About 6% of banker openings tied to New York are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, which reflects limited but real flexibility. The roles most likely to offer remote or hybrid arrangements are credit analysts, underwriters, and back-office compliance or operations positions that don't require direct branch presence.
How can I get hired as a banker in New York with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying for a personal banker, teller, or financial services representative role at a large retail branch in New York City, Buffalo, or Albany, where institutions like JPMorgan Chase, Citibank, and M&T Bank run structured associate and new-graduate programs. These programs provide on-the-job training and often sponsor FINRA licensing. Lateral moves from customer service or call center roles within financial institutions are also a common door in. Completing a Series 6 exam before applying gives candidates a measurable edge.
